Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Overnight journey, Delhi to Shimla

Reach ISBT Kashmere Gate in Delhi by evening and board the overnight Volvo to Shimla, which departs around 9 pm. The coach runs through the Shivalik foothills and climbs into Himachal overnight, so you sleep through the long haul and wake close to the hills. Meals are not included on the road tonight. Grab dinner before you board.

Day 2: Shimla local sightseeing

After hotel check-in and a short rest, spend the day on foot around colonial Shimla. Walk the Ridge to Christ Church, the neo-Gothic landmark finished in 1857 and the second oldest church in north India, then the Gaiety Theatre and Scandal Point on the Mall. Climb to Jakhoo Hill, the town's highest point at about 2,455 metres, for the giant Hanuman statue and the valley view, and stop at Sankat Mochan temple on the way. The evening is free for Lakkar Bazaar and the Tibetan market before dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Kufri day trip

After breakfast, drive out to Kufri, about 16 kilometres from Shimla and roughly an hour through deodar forest. The Himalayan Nature Park here sits at around 2,630 metres and keeps hill wildlife such as Himalayan bear and musk deer. From the short Mahasu Peak trail you look straight down into the Green Valley, the wide pine bowl that most Kufri photos are taken from. In winter this stretch is where the snow points and pony rides set up. Back to Shimla by evening for dinner and the night.

Day 4: Naldehra (optional Chail)

Today heads to Naldehra, about 22 kilometres past Shimla, built around a 9-hole golf course laid out in the early 1900s and among the oldest in India, ringed by cedar. It is quieter than Kufri and has been a Bollywood shooting favourite for years. If you would rather trade the golf green for snow and history, ask to swap in the optional Chail extension instead: Chail Palace, the world's highest cricket ground at about 2,444 metres, and the Kali Tibba temple on the ridge. Either way you are back in Shimla for the final dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Farewell Shimla

Have breakfast, check out, and keep the last morning slow. Depending on your Volvo timing you can fit in a final walk on the Mall or last-minute shopping before you board the coach back to Delhi in the evening, closing out the 4 nights and 5 days.

Two nights are on a 3-star basis in Shimla. The standard hotel on this package is Greens Hotels and Resorts at Summer Hill, a little back from the Mall Road crowd.
