Day 1: Srinagar: airport pick-up and a houseboat night on Dal Lake

Your honeymoon begins the moment you land. On arrival at Srinagar Airport, the agent's representative welcomes you and drives you to a jetty on the Dal Lake, where the houseboats are docked and made up for couples. After check-in and lunch on the houseboat, take it slow for a few hours. In the evening you glide out on a private shikara ride towards Nehru Park, watching the light change over the water. Dinner is served on the houseboat, and you spend the night on the lake, which is the single most romantic stay of the whole trip.

Day 2: Gulmarg: gondola to Apharwat and a day at leisure

After a filling breakfast you transfer to Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers at around 2,650 m. The day is yours for golf, easy nature walks, bird watching and pony rides, or simply long strolls across the open meadow. Do not miss the famous Gulmarg Gondola: Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori, and Phase 2 carries you on towards the Apharwat peak and its snow, one of the highest cable-car rides in the world. Gondola tickets are sold online only on the J&K Cable Car Corporation site, so book your slot as soon as your dates are fixed: Phase 2 often sells out early in peak season. Breakfast and dinner are served at the hotel, where you stay overnight.

Day 3: Pahalgam: valleys, the Lidder River and a candlelight dinner

The third day starts with breakfast in Gulmarg, then you drive to Pahalgam, about 140 km and 4.5 to 5 hours on the road. En route you can stop at the Avantipur ruins and the Anantnag sulphur springs, so you reach Pahalgam by mid-afternoon. After check-in and a late lunch, keep the rest of the day easy with a pony ride or a slow walk through the pine forest along the Lidder River. Aru Valley and Betaab Valley are short drives from town, but only local Pahalgam union taxis can take visitors there and they are paid locally, so ask your agent to fit them into the next morning or add a night in Pahalgam. The day ends with a romantic candlelight dinner and an overnight stay in Pahalgam.

Day 4: Srinagar: Shankaracharya Hill and the Mughal Gardens

If you want to see Betaab Valley or Aru Valley, take a local union taxi from Pahalgam early in the morning before checkout. After breakfast you check out and drive back to Srinagar, about 90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Head first to the Shankaracharya Hill temple for its views over the city and lake (expect a climb of 240-odd steps and a security check). Spend the evening in two of the Grand Mughal Gardens, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, both laid out in the 17th century; Shalimar Bagh was built by Emperor Jahangir for his queen Nur Jahan. Chashme Shahi, Pari Mahal and, in spring (roughly late March to mid-April), the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia's largest, are best kept for an extra night in Srinagar if you want more. Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Sonamarg: the meadow of gold

After breakfast you set out on a day excursion to Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, one of the most scenic drives in Kashmir and the base point for the Amarnath Yatra. Have lunch at a local restaurant and pick from the optional activities: a pony ride up towards the Thajiwas glacier, a short trek, or a river-side walk. In the evening you return to your Srinagar hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Srinagar: departure

After breakfast at your Srinagar hotel you are transferred to the airport in time for your flight home, carrying the memories of your Kashmir honeymoon with you.

Gulmarg is all adventure and open space. Skiing in winter, and trekking, snowboarding, golfing, mountain biking and fishing the rest of the year, all sit below the gondola, which offers the most spectacular views in the valley and is the highlight for most couples.

Pahalgam is wrapped around the Lidder River and the Betaab Valley, with clear mountain water and deep green slopes. It is known for rafting on the Lidder, gentle golf and shopping for traditional Kashmiri crafts, and it is the gateway to Aru Valley and Betaab Valley, reached by local Pahalgam union taxi.

Sonamarg, the meadow of gold, has some of the most dramatic views in Kashmir. It is a base point for the Amarnath Yatra, and rafting, zorbing and trekking are all run around the main viewpoints.

Best time for a Kashmir honeymoon

Kashmir is a honeymoon destination all year except the peak monsoon weeks. March to August is the most popular window: the valleys are green, the days are pleasant and the gardens are in full colour. Time it for late March to mid-April and you catch the tulips at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden. If snow is the point of the trip, December to March turns Gulmarg into a ski resort, with the best snow usually in January and February, though some high roads can close after heavy falls.
