Places You Will Visit in Chail

Chail is small, which is its charm. You can cover the headline sights in a relaxed day, and this is where the from-Delhi package earns its keep over a day trip out of Shimla.

Chail Palace

The Maharaja of Patiala built this palace in 1891 as his summer capital, on a ridge higher than Shimla, after the British barred him from that town. Today it is a heritage property run by HPTDC, with lawns, a colonial-era interior and cottages set in cedar. It is the one sight nobody skips.

World's highest cricket ground

At about 2,444 metres, the Chail cricket and polo ground is the highest in the world, levelled off a hilltop in 1893 by cutting the peak flat. It sits inside the palace estate, ringed by deodar, and it is a short, photogenic stop.

Kali Ka Tibba

A hilltop temple at roughly 2,900 metres with a clean 360-degree sweep of the Himalayan ranges. It is about 11 to 12 km from Chail town and best reached mid-morning before the cloud builds. On a clear day this is the finest view on the trip.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary

Around 110 sq km of oak and pine that was set aside to bring back the cheer pheasant. You may also spot ghoral, sambar and a lot of birdlife on the forest trails. Add a permit-controlled walk here if you want a couple of quiet hours away from the road.

Gurudwara Sahib and Siddh Baba Ka Mandir

The Chail gurudwara and the Siddh Baba shrine round out the local circuit. Local lore ties the shrine to the palace itself, and both are short detours on the sightseeing loop your cab already runs.

Things to Do in Chail

• Camping. Camp in the pine belt on the edge of the sanctuary, with bonfire evenings under a clear hill sky.

• Easy treks. Short deodar trails around Kali Ka Tibba and the sanctuary suit first-timers and families.

• Bird-watching. The sanctuary and the palace lawns at dawn are the pick for the cheer pheasant and hill-bird species.

• Slow travel. Nature walks, a round on the historic polo lawns and slow forest drives fill the second half of a Chail day.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 | Delhi to Shimla: arrival and sightseeing

You are picked up from Delhi by private cab and driven up to Shimla. After checking in and freshening up, you head out on the classic Shimla circuit: the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Jakhoo Temple, The Ridge, Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, Mall Road, Kali Bari Temple and the Town Hall. Return to the hotel for the night.

Day 2 | Shimla to Kufri

After breakfast you drive the short hop to Kufri, the little resort town above Shimla. The day covers Green Valley, the Himalayan Nature Park (mini zoo), the Kufri viewpoint, Fun World and the Indira Gandhi tourist park, with the Wildflower Hall and Chini Bungalow area on the way. In winter this is the snow point of the trip. Back to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3 | Transfer to Chail and sightseeing

Check out early and drive from Shimla down to Chail, about 45 km and roughly 1.5 hours through the hills. The Chail circuit takes in Chail Palace, the world's highest cricket and polo ground, and, if you have time, the Kali Ka Tibba viewpoint and the edge of the wildlife sanctuary. Settle into your Chail hotel and spend the evening in the quiet of the forest.

Day 4 | Chail to Delhi: departure

After a relaxed breakfast and a last walk through the grounds, you check out and begin the drive back to Delhi with your travel expert on call for the road. If your train or flight home leaves from Chandigarh, the drop can be arranged there instead; just flag it when you customise the plan.

How to Reach Chail From Delhi

By road, Chail is about 346 km from Delhi, roughly an 8 to 9 hour drive via the Kalka, Solan and Kandaghat route. Your package covers the full run by private cab, so you do not have to touch the wheel.

By rail, the nearest major railhead is Kalka (about 295 km from Delhi). From there you can take the Kalka to Shimla toy train and road the last stretch to Chail, or we handle the road transfer from the station.
