Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Jaipur to Shimla, arrival and sightseeing

Your Himachal trip from Jaipur begins with an overnight transfer up to Shimla, where the trip representative meets you and helps you check in. Once you have freshened up, head out to the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, then walk the Mall Road and the Ridge, the open promenade that is the heart of the town. Follow it with the climb to Jakhu Temple, set high in the Shivalik range above the old summer capital of British India, and a look at Christ Church and Scandal Point on the way back. Dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel in Shimla.

Day 2: Shimla to Kufri

After breakfast you continue the Shimla sightseeing and drive out to Kufri, about 20 km on, known for its meadows and its winter adventure sports. Spend the afternoon there, then keep the evening for shopping around the Mall and the Ridge before returning to the hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Shimla to Manali via the Kullu Valley

This is a driving day, and a scenic one. You leave Shimla after breakfast and run north to Manali along the Beas River through the Kullu Valley, passing Sundernagar Lake, the Pandoh Dam and the roadside Vaishno Devi temple on the way. Reach Manali by evening, check in, and rest up for the two full days that follow. Dinner and overnight in Manali.

Day 4: Solang Valley adventure day

After breakfast you head up to the Solang Valley, the adventure hub just outside Manali. Depending on the season you can try the ropeway, zorbing, horse riding and snow activities in winter, or paragliding and ATV rides in the clearer months. Travellers who want the high snow can add on Rohtang Pass from here; it runs seasonally, needs a local permit, and the permit and vehicle charge are paid on the ground (ask your agent to arrange it in advance). Back to the hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 5: Manali temple circuit

A slower, local day. After breakfast visit the Hadimba Temple in its cedar grove, then the Vashisht hot springs and temple, Van Vihar by the river and the Tibetan monastery in town. It is an easy day on foot and by short drives, a good counterpoint to the Solang adventure. Dinner and overnight in Manali.

Day 6: Manali to Dharamshala

On the sixth day you check out after breakfast and transfer west to Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan community in India. It is a long mountain drive, so the day is mostly transit; you arrive by evening and settle in for an overnight stay in Dharamshala.

Day 7: McLeodganj sightseeing, on to Dalhousie

After breakfast explore McLeodganj and Dharamshala: Dal Lake, St John in the Wilderness church, the Bhagsunag temple and waterfall, and the Tibetan monastery complex. In the afternoon you drive on to Dalhousie for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 8: Dalhousie and Khajjiar excursion

Breakfast first, then a start at Subhash Baoli before the full-day excursion to Khajjiar, the meadow-and-lake bowl often called the mini Switzerland of India. You pass Bakrota Hills and Lakkar Mandi on the way. Keep the evening for the Dalhousie markets and malls, then back to the hotel for the night.

Day 9: Dalhousie to Jaipur, departure

How to Reach Himachal from Jaipur

• By road: the drive from Jaipur to Shimla runs about 606 km and 11 to 12 hours via Delhi and Chandigarh; on this package it is done as an overnight transfer so you wake up near the hills.
• By train: there is no direct train from Jaipur to Shimla. Travellers usually take a train to Kalka, then the Kalka to Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line, for the last climb.
• By flight: the quickest option is a flight from Jaipur to Chandigarh (or Shimla Jubbarhatti when running), then a road transfer up. This is the shortest way to trade the long drive for a couple of hours in the air.
