Overview

Kashi is a city on the banks of the Ganga river, and is also known as Varanasi, Benares or Rudravasa. It is the holiest city among the many cities in India—to both Hindus and Buddhists. As a city situated on the holy Ganges, and being a part of many stories in Hindu mythology, Kashi is highly revered among pilgrims. It is believed that getting cremated in Kashi on the banks of the holy river Ganges is a direct path to salvation—and breaking the cycle of rebirth. The name Kashi refers to the Sanskrit word “to shine”, making the city the “City of Light”.

According to Hindu belief, the city of Kashi was created by Lord Shiva, when one of Lord Brahma’s heads was torn off in a fight between him and Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva carried this head in a parade of victory and dropped it at the place where Kashi stands today, making this city very holy and sacred. The city is also said to be the place where the Pandavas, in the Hindu epic Mahabharata visited to atone for their sins. Apart from the religious and historical significance, the city of Kashi is also a cultural and industrial hub.
