Kashmir in December: Weather, Snow and Road Status

Each stop on this trip behaves differently in December. Gulmarg is the snow guarantee, Srinagar is the cold but comfortable base, and Pahalgam is the scenic middle ground. These are typical December ranges; a cold wave can push night temperatures 3 to 4 degrees lower for a few days.

Itinerary

Day 1: Srinagar Arrival, Mughal Gardens and a Winter Shikara Ride

Your driver meets you at Srinagar Airport and takes you to the hotel. Check in, have a cup of hot kahwa and an early lunch. The December sun is strongest between 11 am and 3 pm, so that is your window for the gardens.

Head out by about 12:30 pm to the famous Mughal gardens of Srinagar: Nishat Bagh, the Garden of Joy, on the shore of Dal Lake, and Shalimar Bagh, the Abode of Love. In winter the flowerbeds are bare, but the terraces, the stone channels and the chinar trunks stand out against the snow line on the Zabarwan ridge, and you have the paths largely to yourself. Around 3:30 pm, before the sun drops behind the hills at about 5:15 pm, enjoy a Shikara ride on the Dal Lake past the floating gardens and the houseboat rows. Boatmen keep thick blankets on board, and some carry a kangri, the wicker-and-clay fire pot Kashmiris tuck under their pherans. Dinner is at the hotel.

Day 2: Day Trip to Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley

After breakfast, drive about 95 km (2.5 to 3 hours) towards Pahalgam. On the way, stop at Pampore, the saffron town. The crocus harvest ends in November, so in December the fields are bare, but the roadside shops sell this season's saffron and kahwa, and it is the right place to buy both. From there the road climbs to Pahalgam with the Pir Panjal range to the west and the Lidder river beside you for the last stretch.

At Pahalgam, walk along the Lidder riverbank and through the pine slopes around town, which often hold snow in December, or take a pony ride to the viewpoints open that day. With the time you have, pick one side valley at most: Aru Valley or Betaab Valley, reached only by Pahalgam union taxis, booked at the taxi stand and paid locally, and only when snow allows the road. The Baisaran meadow is closed to visitors, so it is not part of this trip. Head back before 4 pm to avoid driving in the dark on frosty roads, and have dinner back at the hotel in Srinagar.

Day 3: Gulmarg Snow Day, Gondola Ride and a Houseboat Night

Leave early, after breakfast, for the 50 km drive (1.5 to 2 hours) towards Gulmarg. At Tangmarg, the last town before the climb, rent snow boots and a padded jacket if you have not brought them. After fresh snow, the final climb from Tangmarg to Gulmarg needs a 4x4 or a car with snow chains, hired at the stand and paid on the day.

In Gulmarg, the Gondola is the main event. Phase 1 lifts you to Kongdoori at about 3,080 m, where the ski slopes and sledge runs are. Phase 2 continues to Apharwat at about 3,950 m when the wind allows, for the highest snow views of the trip. Gondola tickets are sold online only on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal and are paid by you, so book them once your dates are fixed. Between rides, try a sledge, a snow-scooter run or a 1 to 2 hour ski lesson with a certified instructor, all paid locally. Leave Gulmarg by about 3:30 pm, before the light goes.

Back in Srinagar, you check in to your houseboat on Nigeen Lake. Dinner is served on board, and a night on the water, wrapped up against the cold, is the part of this trip most December travellers talk about afterwards.

Day 4: Hazratbal, Srinagar Old City and Departure

Breakfast is on the houseboat, and you can watch the morning mist lift off Nigeen Lake. On the way out, ask your driver to stop at the Hazratbal Shrine on the northern shore of Dal Lake, a short drive from Nigeen. If your flight leaves after 3 pm, you also have time for the Jamia Masjid in the old city, with its wooden pillars carved from deodar trunks, and for Polo View or Lal Chowk, the places to buy a pheran, pashmina or walnut-wood pieces. Srinagar Airport has extra security checks at the gate, so reach it about 2.5 hours before departure. Winter fog can hold up morning departures from Srinagar, so pick an afternoon return and leave a buffer before any onward connection.

How to Reach Kashmir in December

Fly into Srinagar (SXR). Direct flights run from Delhi, Mumbai and several other metros, and the package starts with your airport pickup. By rail, the Vande Bharat runs from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar in about 5 hours. By road, NH44 from Jammu runs through the Navyug tunnel at Banihal, and it can close for a day after heavy snowfall, which makes flying the safer choice in December.
