Overview
Lakshadweep, originally called Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi islands are a group of 36 islands and they are known for their exotic, clean beaches and vast green landscape. The name, 'Lakshadweep' means ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Sanskrit and Malayalam. It is the smallest Union Territory of India having an area of 32 sq km. The capital is Kavaratti and it is also the main town of the Union Territory. The Union Territory is made of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks, and ten inhabited islands. Not all the islands of Lakshadweep are inhabited, few are really far, others have a small population. The official languages are Malayalam and English and Andrott is the largest city.
The majestic landscapes, calm and cool beaches, beautiful flora and fauna, and a steady lifestyle of local people enhance the beauty of Lakshadweep. Kavaratti is home to many mosques, including the well known Ujra Mosque, as well as Kavaratti Aquarium which displays regional fishes, sharks and coral species. Tourists need to get a permit to visit the islands but the islands are worth it. One of the 36 small islands of Lakshadweep group of Islands, Minicoy is one of the well-maintained secrets of India. Maliku, as they call it in the local language is exclusively known for white-sand beaches, colourful coral reefs and freshwater of the colossal ocean.
