Skiing in Narkanda: Slopes, Season and Lessons

The skiing happens on the open slopes below Hatu Peak, a short drive above Narkanda town. The main run is a wide, beginner-friendly gradient, which is the reason Narkanda earns its 'learn to ski' reputation. Snow usually settles from mid-December and the slopes are at their best through January and February. Local ski operators at the slope rent boots, skis and poles and run short beginner sessions, so you do not need to arrive with gear or prior experience (confirm what your package covers when you book). Snowboarding is possible in a good snow year, and on a clear day the ridge opens up long views toward the Kinnaur ranges.

Two honest notes so you can plan. First, this is a seasonal activity. If you travel outside the Dec to Feb window the snow may have melted and the day becomes a scenic drive to Hatu Peak and the apple orchards rather than a ski day. Second, Narkanda is a day excursion from your Shimla hotel on this itinerary, so you get roughly half a day on the snow. If skiing is the whole point of your trip, ask us to add a Narkanda night so you get two mornings on the slopes.

Your 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and transfer to Shimla

Land in Delhi by flight or train, where our representative meets you and starts the drive up to Shimla by private cab. It is a long but scenic climb into the snow-line hills. Check in to your 4-star Shimla hotel, settle in and rest. Nothing is scheduled tonight, so use the evening to walk the Mall Road if you have the energy and get an early night before the sightseeing begins.

Day 2: Shimla sightseeing and Kufri

After breakfast, spend the morning on Shimla's classics, the Himachal State Museum, the Green Valley viewpoint and the hilltop Jakhu Temple. Then drive out to Kufri, which in peak winter turns into a snow-play spot with a small nursery slope, a useful warm-up if you have never stood on snow before your Narkanda ski day. Return to Shimla for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Naldehra and Mashobra

Head out after breakfast to Naldehra, home to one of the highest golf courses in the country, ringed by deodar forest, then on to Mashobra and the Craignano nature park. There is time for a horse ride through the pines and a stop at the Mahunag temple. It is the quietest, greenest day of the trip. Drive back to your Shimla hotel for dinner and rest.

Day 4: Narkanda skiing day (the highlight)

This is what you came for. After breakfast you drive along the Hindustan-Tibet Road to Narkanda, past terraced apple orchards including the well-known Stokes Farm. At Narkanda you head up toward the Hatu Peak slopes for your time on the snow, skiing the beginner runs with the local operators, or, if you are travelling off the snow season, taking the short trek and drive up to Hatu Peak for the views instead. There is time to see Tani Jubbar lake and the small Hatu Mata temple before you drive back to Shimla for the night.

Day 5: Departure

Enjoy a last breakfast in Shimla and check out. Your cab drives you back to Delhi for your onward flight or train home, with the option to stop for photos on the way down.
