Day-by-Day Itinerary (4N/5D)

Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla (overnight Volvo)

Your trip starts in the evening at Delhi (ISBT Kashmere Gate), where you board the overnight Volvo coach to Shimla, about 350 km away. You sleep through the plains and wake to the first pine ridges as the road climbs; on a clear morning you get your first Himalayan views, the golf greens at Naldehra and the ski slopes above Kufri and Narkanda off in the distance. The coach reaches Shimla by 6 to 7 am. Overnight on board.

Day 2 – Arrive Shimla, local sightseeing

Our representative meets you on arrival and helps with the hotel check-in, then the day is yours for Shimla itself. Walk the pedestrian Mall Road and the Ridge, with Christ Church and the old Gaiety Theatre at the top and Scandal Point where the two meet. Climb up to the Jakhoo Temple, marked by its giant Hanuman statue and its resident langurs, and stop at the Sankat Mochan and Kali Bari temples. There is time to browse the Lower Bazaar and Lakkar Bazaar for Himachali woollens and wood craft before dinner. Overnight in Shimla.

Day 3 – Kufri and Mashobra excursion

After breakfast you head out to Kufri, one of the highest points around Shimla and the trip's snow-and-views day. It is pony and yak rides through the pine, the Himalayan Nature Park with its native birds and animals, and, in winter, the small ski runs. On the way you can take in the green hills at Mashobra and the quiet cedar slopes and golf course at Naldehra. Many travellers add the short climb to Jakhoo again for sunset. Return for dinner and an overnight stay in Shimla.

Day 4 – Chail day trip

Today is Chail, the old summer capital of the Patiala royals, about a two-hour drive through quiet forest. You visit the Chail Palace and its grounds, the Chail Cricket Ground (the highest in the world, built into a levelled hilltop), and the hilltop Kali Tibba temple with its wide valley views. It is a slower, greener counterpoint to busy Shimla. Drive back in the evening for dinner and your last night in the hotel.

Day 5 – Departure

After breakfast and check-out, you are dropped at the Volvo stand for the return coach to Delhi, a drive of about 8 to 10 hours that reaches Delhi by the following morning. July to September is green and cheaper but brings the monsoon, with the occasional landslide delay on hill roads, so keep the plan flexible. How to Reach Shimla

This package runs on the overnight Volvo from Delhi, which is why it starts and ends at Delhi. If you are arranging your own arrival into the region, there are three practical ways in. By road, Shimla is about 350 km from Delhi, a 7 to 8 hour drive, and roughly 113 km up from Chandigarh, about 3.5 hours. By air, the nearest airport is Chandigarh (about 3.5 hours by road); the small Shimla airport at Jubbarhatti has very limited flights. By train, the famous route is to take a train to Kalka and change to the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla toy train, a slow, scenic climb that is a highlight in itself.
