• By air (the practical route): fly from Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR) to Chandigarh (IXC), the closest well-connected airport to Shimla and Manali. One-way fares usually run about Rs 9,000 to Rs 16,000 depending on the season and how early you book. From Chandigarh, Shimla is about 113 km and we drive you up on arrival day.

• Delhi as an alternative gateway: Bangalore to Delhi (DEL) flights are frequent and often cheaper, and Delhi to Shimla is about 343 km by road. If you prefer to fly into Delhi, tell us and we plan the pickup and the first day's drive around it.

Day 1 // Arrival at Chandigarh, drive up to Shimla

Fly from Bangalore to Chandigarh, where our representative meets you and drives you up to Shimla, about 113 km and close to 4 hours through the pine slopes. On the way you pass Green Valley, one of the prettiest stretches on the Shimla road, with deodar hills rolling away on both sides. Reach Shimla, check in and keep the evening free. If you are up for a short walk, the climb to Jakhoo Temple at the town's highest point is worth it for the view over the valley. Overnight in Shimla.

Day 2 // Shimla sightseeing: the Ridge, Kufri and Christ Church

After breakfast you head out for a full day around Shimla. Start at the Himachal State Museum, then walk the Ridge and Mall Road, the open promenade at the heart of the town, and stop at Christ Church, the neo-Gothic landmark that has stood over the Ridge since the 1850s. A short drive takes you out to Kufri, about 16 km away, known for its open meadows and, in the winter months, its snow slopes and pony rides. Return by evening for a quiet night in Shimla.

Day 3 // Shimla to Manali through the Kullu valley

After breakfast you check out and set off on the long, scenic drive to Manali, about 290 km via Naldehra. The road runs down through Mandi, then climbs alongside the Beas river into the Kullu valley, the apple country that opens out below Manali. It is a full day on the road with plenty of stops for tea and photographs. Reach Manali by evening, check in and rest. Overnight in Manali.

Day 4 // Manali sightseeing: Hadimba, Manu Temple and the monastery

Post breakfast you set out to see Manali. Visit the Hadimba Devi Temple, the cedar-wood shrine set in a forest clearing, and the Manu Temple in Old Manali, dedicated to the sage Manu. Stop at the Vashisht temple and its natural hot-water springs, and look in at the Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa, the Tibetan monastery in town with its prayer wheels and gilded Buddha. Keep the evening for Mall Road. Overnight in Manali.

Day 5 // Excursion to Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass

After breakfast you have a choice for the day. Head to Solang Valley for the adventure slopes, where paragliding, zorbing and the ropeway run through the year and, in the snow months, skiing and snow-scooter rides are on offer. Or drive up towards Rohtang Pass through Kothi and the Rahalla waterfall for the snow line. Rohtang is subject to the pass being open and a permit that is arranged locally and depends on the weather; the package covers the drive, not the permit fee. In the evening head back to Mall Road for last shopping. Overnight in Manali.

Day 6 // Departure from Chandigarh

October to February is the classic window if snow is what you are after. January brings the heaviest, freshest falls, temperatures around Shimla and Manali drop below zero, and you will want heavy woollens. March to June is the other good stretch, with clear, mild days that suit the sightseeing and the Solang activities, and it is the season most families pick. Rohtang Pass usually opens around May and stays reachable through the warmer months, weather permitting; in deep winter it is closed by snow.
