How to Reach Shimla, Kullu and Manali from Hyderabad
There is no direct flight or train from Hyderabad to Shimla or Manali, so the trip is a short flight followed by a scenic road leg. The quickest gateway is Chandigarh, which sits closest to the hills. Fly Hyderabad to Chandigarh (about two and a half hours), then drive roughly 113 km up to Shimla in three and a half to four hours. Travellers who take a Delhi flight instead drive about 350 km from Delhi to Shimla. Coming back, Manali to Chandigarh airport is around 310 km, so keep the final day free for the transfer. The nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar (Kullu), about 50 km away, useful if a direct connection is running.
| Leg | Mode | Distance / time |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad (HYD) to Chandigarh (IXC) | Flight | about 2 hr 30 min |
| Chandigarh airport to Shimla | Road | about 113 km, 3.5 to 4 hr |
| Shimla to Manali (via Kullu) | Road | about 250 to 260 km, 7 to 8 hr |
| Manali to Chandigarh airport | Road | about 310 km, 8 to 9 hr |
| Alternate: Hyderabad to Delhi (DEL) | Flight | about 2 hr 10 min |
| Delhi to Shimla | Road | about 350 km, 7 to 8 hr |
| Nearest airport to Manali: Bhuntar (KUU) | Flight + road | about 50 km from Manali |
Day-Wise Itinerary
Day 1: Fly from Hyderabad, drive up to Shimla
Take your morning flight out of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and land at Chandigarh, the closest gateway to Shimla. Our driver meets you at the airport for the road climb into the hills, roughly 113 km and about four hours, with the Shivalik ranges opening up as you gain height. Travellers on a Delhi flight cover a longer 350 km stretch. Check in to your Shimla hotel by evening, have dinner and rest for the day ahead. Overnight in Shimla.
Day 2: Shimla and Kufri sightseeing
After breakfast you spend the day around Shimla. Walk the Ridge and Mall Road, look in at the Himachal State Museum, and ride the short ropeway up to Jakhoo Temple, home to the towering Hanuman statue visible from most of the town. In the afternoon drive out to Kufri, about 16 km away, for the Mahasu Peak viewpoint and the Green Valley stretch, with pony rides and adventure points on offer. In winter Kufri is the nearest reliable snow to Shimla. Back on Mall Road for the evening. Overnight in Shimla.
Day 3: Shimla to Manali through the Kullu valley
Check out after breakfast for the long, pretty drive to Manali, about 250 to 260 km following the Beas river down into the Kullu valley. This is the Kullu leg that gives the circuit its name. Water level permitting, you can stop for the river-rafting stretch near Pirdi, and browse the Kullu shawl and handloom workshops that the valley is known for. Reach Manali by evening, check in and settle in. Overnight in Manali.
Day 4: Manali local sightseeing
A full local day in and around Manali after breakfast. Start at the Hadimba Devi Temple set in a deodar cedar grove, then the Manu Temple up in Old Manali. Cross to Vashisht village for its natural hot-water springs and the stone temple beside them, and finish along the Tibetan monastery and Mall Road for shopping and cafes. Overnight in Manali.
Day 5: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Rohtang excursion
Set out early for the day the circuit is built around. Solang Valley comes first, with skiing in season plus paragliding, zorbing and the ropeway. From there you drive through the Atal Tunnel, at about 9 km one of the longest high-altitude tunnels in the world, to reach Sissu on the Lahaul side for snow and river views. Travellers who want the classic snow point can swap Sissu for Rohtang Pass, about 51 km away and subject to permit and season. Naggar Castle and its Roerich art gallery can be added on the way back. Return to Manali by evening. Overnight in Manali.
Day 6: Manali to Hyderabad
After breakfast and checkout it is the road transfer back to your departure airport, about 310 km and eight to nine hours to Chandigarh, or longer if you fly from Delhi. Time the drive to your flight so you reach the airport with room to spare, then fly home to Hyderabad with the hills behind you.
Places You Will Cover
• Shimla the ridge, Mall Road, Himachal State Museum and the Jakhoo Temple ropeway.
• Kufri Mahasu Peak, Green Valley and the closest snow point to Shimla in winter.
• Kullu valley the Beas-side drive, Kullu shawl and handloom workshops, and the Pirdi rafting stretch.
• Manali Hadimba Devi Temple, Manu Temple, Vashisht hot springs, the Tibetan monastery and Mall Road.
• Solang Valley skiing, paragliding, zorbing and the ropeway.
• Atal Tunnel the drive through to Sissu for Lahaul snow and river views.
• Rohtang Pass the seasonal snow pass, permit and weather permitting, with Naggar Castle as an optional add.
Best Time to Visit, and When It Snows
March to June is the pleasant window, with clear days, green valleys and the full Solang and Rohtang programme open. If you are chasing snow, come between December and February, when Kufri, Solang and the Atal Tunnel run to Sissu turn white and the mountains are at their most photogenic. Rohtang Pass usually opens around June and stays accessible into October, closing through the deep winter and reopening once the snow clears. The July to September monsoon brings the lowest fares, but the Kullu to Manali road can slow after heavy rain, so keep the plan flexible in those months.
