How to Reach Spiti Valley from Kolkata

There is no direct flight, train or road link from Kolkata to Spiti. Every option is a two-stage journey: reach the Himachal foothills at Kullu-Manali, Chandigarh, Kalka or Shimla, then take the mountain road to Kaza. By Flight (Fastest)

From Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) the fastest path is a flight to Delhi, which takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, or to Chandigarh. From Delhi you can catch a short onward flight to Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali airport), roughly 1.5 hours, then drive about 50 km to Manali in 1.5 to 2 hours. From Manali the road to Kaza is about 200 km and takes 8 to 9 hours over the season.

Bhuntar has limited, weather-dependent flights, so many travellers instead fly Kolkata to Chandigarh, then drive up. Chandigarh to Manali is about 300 km and 8 to 9 hours by road. If you would rather not self-manage the hill legs, this package picks you up at Kullu Airport on Day 1.

By Train (Budget)

There is no railhead in Spiti. The nearest useful stations are Kalka and Chandigarh. From Kolkata you can board the Howrah-Kalka Mail (12311) direct to Kalka, which takes roughly 30 to 34 hours, or take a faster train such as the Howrah Rajdhani (12301/12305) to New Delhi in about 17 hours and continue to Kalka or Chandigarh. From Kalka, the scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train or a road transfer takes you onward.

A train-plus-road plan is the cheapest way to reach Spiti from Kolkata, but budget two nights of travel before you even begin the hill drive. It suits travellers with time in hand who want to cut the airfare.

By Road: Shimla Route vs Manali Route to Kaza

Once you reach Himachal there are two ways up to Kaza, and the choice matters for both safety and scenery. The Shimla route climbs gradually over two to three days and helps your body adjust to altitude. The Manali route is shorter but gains height fast, which raises the risk of mountain sickness. Many travellers go up one way and return the other to see the full circuit.

The Manali side crosses the Atal Tunnel below Rohtang, then climbs over Kunzum Pass (about 4,590 m), the gateway into Spiti. Day 1: Arrive Manali and local sightseeing

The landscape shifts from green pine to bare high-desert mountains within a few hours. Reach Kaza by evening, check in and rest to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 3: Kaza and the high villages

A full day exploring Spiti's famous high-altitude villages. Visit the dramatic Key Monastery perched above the river, then Kibber, one of the highest inhabited villages linked by motorable road. Continue to Komik, among the highest villages in Asia, and Langza with its giant Buddha statue and fossil-rich slopes. Nearby Hikkim is home to the world's highest post office, where you can mail a postcard home. Overnight in Kaza.

Day 4: Kaza to Chandratal Lake

Check out after breakfast and drive towards Chandratal, the crescent-shaped Moon Lake, crossing back over the Kunzum stretch en route. Spend the afternoon by the lake, ringed by snow-capped peaks, then settle into a Swiss-tent camp nearby for a night under a sky thick with stars. Dinner and campfire at the camp.

Day 5: Chandratal to Manali

Drive back to Manali via the Rohtang side, passing Solang Valley, Nehru Kund and the Rahala Falls, with big mountain views the whole way. Check in to your Manali hotel, unwind and stay overnight.

Day 6: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Kullu Airport for your onward journey home, or add a stop at the Kullu shawl workshops on the way. You carry back the memories of one of the Himalayas' most striking valleys.

Spiti sits high. Kaza is around 3,650 m and Kunzum Pass around 4,590 m, so mild altitude symptoms are common on the first day or two. Climb gradually, which is why the Shimla route is gentler on the body, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on arrival, and give yourself a rest evening in Kaza before the long village day. If headaches or breathlessness get worse rather than better, descend and seek help.
