Best Time To Visit

Sri Lankan Wet Season (May to November)

The wet season in Sri Lanka can be divided into three phases. The first phase, from May to June receives less rainfall as compared to the third phase between October and November. The ‘inter-monsoon’ period; between July and September is great for outdoor activities and exploring the beaches. This is also the off peak season and therefore less crowds.

Dry Season in Sri Lanka(December to April)

The weather in the dry season is the best time to explore the country, especially the rural areas with its lush green landscape. The monsoons make the scenery even more pristine and enamoring. The months between January and March are best to plan the outdoor tour of all the entire country. The temperature is relatively warmer and more sunny in the southern and western coasts of the country. April is ideal for relaxing on the sun-kissed beaches. However the effect of monsoons varies across the country and therefore needs to have a thorough understanding before you plan your trip.

  • Best Time to visit Eastern and Northern areas (Eravur, Habarana, Trincomalee)is April to September
  • Best time to visit the Central Hills (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and others)is March
  • Best time to visit the southern and western coastline (Chilaw, Galle, Colombo) would be October to March

Last time when we visited, we stayed in the same hotels. Rooms were good. This time it was not good. Had paid entrance fees for National museum but we couldn't go due to time constraint, also money was not refunded.

Faisal's 7 days trip to Sri Lanka

Everything mentioned in the package was to the point as agreed. Hotels, places, cab, driver, timings were all as per our requirement considering we have an infant. During the trip Ravisha (Udani tours) was easily available for any queries and assistance. Here is my comments Minus: 1. Some places are still closed or partially closed due to COVID, so the tour operator should pre inform or remove them from the itinerary to save traveling time. Floating market and Lotus tower for example, none the less i enjoyed Colombo for its cleanliness and pollution free environment. 2. Driver needs to improve his English for better communication on future trips. Provided his communication was better we would have managed better movement Plus 1. My accommodation in Bentota was booked as a sea view room and i did not get that. I spoke to Ravisha and immediately she was able to give me the same category room in a hotel near by which was according to me a better one. Really impressed with the quick response. 2. Driver was polite and friendly which made us feel comfortable throughout the trip. 2 hotels had hot water issues. Possibly due to COVID hotel readiness might not be 100%.

Anurag's 8 days trip to Sri Lanka

Good experience overall. Driver had asked for extra cash two times. Second time it was asked after a trip was taken and there was a scene created in front of hotel staff which was uncalled for. This could have been handled properly and systematically to avoid hostility for a few days. Also, money he charged after supposedly an extra trip was 1000 bucks above his own mentioned per km charges. This made our last few days not so good.

Saumya's 6 days trip to Sri Lanka

It was a good experience. Everything was pleasant and smooth. The cab driver was extremely polite and made our travel so smooth. Just the hotel selection could have been better. 3 out of 5 hotels during the trip were not up to the mark in terms of food, service and approachability.

Sri Lankan Cuisine

The cuisine of Sri Lanka is unique because of influences and mixture from many cultures due to a history of colonization. Here are some of the delicacies of Sri Lanka that you must try:

  • Asmi (deep frying batter of kneaded rice flour with coconut milk and juice of cinnamon leaves)
  • Polos (jackfruit cooked with roasted spices)
  • Wambatu Moju (traditional eggplant pickle)
  • Kukul Mas Curry (chicken curry with coconut milk and tomato based curry)
  • Sri Lankan Egg Hoppers (eggs with a batter of rice flour, coconut milk and a little sugar)

Any holiday is unfulfilled without exploring the markets and going on a shopping tour. Here are a few markets you should visit while on the island to witness the culture of the local people:

  • Pettah Market in Colombo
  • Rangala House Art Gallery in Kandy
  • Mlesna Tea Centre in Galle and Colombo
  • Olanda Furnitures in Galle
  • Barefoot in Colombo

Devil Masks and Devil Dancers

One of the most unique highlights of Sri Lankan culture are the making of devil masks. Today, the art of making devil masks is concentrated in a few families living in Ambalangoda, Wathugedara and Benthara as well as some parts along the Western coast. These masks are commonly used in rituals, dancing sessions and dramatic adaptations.

The history of Sri Lanka is incomplete without the Ceylon Tea leaves. Exported from China by the British, tea is an important element of the Sri Lankan culture ever since. Here are some of the tea tasting experiences to soothe your soul.

  • Ceylon Tea Trails
  • Kahanda Kanda
