Best Time To Visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan Wet Season (May to November)

The wet season in Sri Lanka can be divided into three phases. The first phase, from May to June receives less rainfall as compared to the third phase between October and November. The ‘inter-monsoon’ period; between July and September is great for outdoor activities and exploring the beaches. This is also the off peak season and therefore less crowds.

Dry Season in Sri Lanka (December to April)

The weather in the dry season is the best time to explore the country, especially the rural areas with its lush green landscape. The monsoons make the scenery even more pristine and enamoring. The months between January and March are best to plan the outdoor tour of all the entire country. The temperature is relatively warmer and more sunny in the southern and western coasts of the country. April is ideal for relaxing on the sun-kissed beaches. However the effect of monsoons varies across the country and therefore needs to have a thorough understanding before you plan your trip.

  • Best Time to visit Eastern and Northern areas (Eravur, Habarana, Trincomalee) is April to September
  • Best time to visit the Central Hills (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and others) is March
  • Best time to visit the southern and western coastline (Chilaw, Galle, Colombo) would be October to March

Santosh's 7 days trip to Sri Lanka

I am happy with the arrangements done by the Trip Travel hub company in Sri Lanka, They have provided good hotels and good car to go around. Although they can do a better job with planning the itinerary as we faced dificulty to cover everything that was planned in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Ramboda. We
liked the accomodation provided in Sigirya, Ramboda, Mirissa, but the one in Yala was not that great. The company also should have enquired about our food preferences and planned for restaurants where we could eat proper meals. everyday it was a challenge to find vegetarian restaurent to eat lunch and snacks. The best part of the trip was the hotel Oak Ray Tea Bush, the amazing view from the hotel room was really worth it. Overall the trip was good and satisfactory.

Tour emerald were fantastic. The tour agent and their crew did a wonderful job. The stay in Bentota(Rathna Beach Resort) was not upto the mark. Stains in the bed and the toilets were not clean. I had given a poor review in trip advisor for them. Please do not recommend that beach resort for your cli
ents. Apart from that , it was a wonderful experience.

Pandhareneelkant's 4 days trip to Sri Lanka

The initial plans and arrangements looked good. Due to the rains and landslides, the locations were changed. The travel agent probably tried to reorganise things. He was not fully careful in selecting hotels as I had asked for all 5 star hotels. Even if a 4 star should have been chosen after thoroug
h check. The Bentota stay was a mess. Mirissa was still good. To save money the agent did shabby arrangements not because of time. There were plenty of options. I am not happy with travel triangle for the first time. This must be compensated. Good stay inn Mirissa. Hotel was good though some initial confusion about the package but clarified later. The driver was principally good but not consistent. Young boy, goes away for long in the gaps, every time delayed to return and pick us. Always on the mobile phone. Very insecure driving.

Sharad's 3 days trip to Sri Lanka

Good Arrangements overall. Wish the 3 star hotels were a bit better. They were more like a small family run hotel & did not meet my expectation / imagination (Holiday INN Express is an example of benchmark in my mind). The itinerary was fully packed. We could make it as we chose to drop a couple of
tick mark places. Otherwise; it could be extremely exhaustive. I recommend that the travel should not exceed 5 Hrs. per day. Otherwise; tourist are on the road most of the time & hotel is just to sleep. The roads are very good & the ride is smooth. However, they are narrow especially while visiting mountain destinations as Kandy & the average distance travelled is not more than 40kms per hour. It was raining after 3:00PM on every day during our visit (14th - 18th Nov). This should be considered while planning. Ideally; the day should end by 5:00PM.

Tips For Travellers

Sri Lankan Cuisine

The cuisine of Sri Lanka is unique because of influences and mixture from many cultures due to a history of colonization. Here are some of the delicacies of Sri Lanka that you must try:

  • Asmi (deep frying batter of kneaded rice flour with coconut milk and juice of cinnamon leaves)
  • Polos (jackfruit cooked with roasted spices)
  • Wambatu Moju (traditional eggplant pickle)
  • Kukul Mas Curry (chicken curry with coconut milk and tomato based curry)
  • Sri Lankan Egg Hoppers (eggs with a batter of rice flour, coconut milk and a little sugar)

Markets

Any holiday is unfulfilled without exploring the markets and going on a shopping tour. Here are a few markets you should visit while on the island to witness the culture of the local people:

  • Pettah Market in Colombo
  • Rangala House Art Gallery in Kandy
  • Mlesna Tea Centre in Galle and Colombo
  • Olanda Furnitures in Galle
  • Barefoot in Colombo

Devil Masks and Devil Dancers

One of the most unique highlights of Sri Lankan culture are the making of devil masks. Today, the art of making devil masks is concentrated in a few families living in Ambalangoda, Wathugedara and Benthara as well as some parts along the Western coast. These masks are commonly used in rituals, dancing sessions and dramatic adaptations.

Tea

The history of Sri Lanka is incomplete without the Ceylon Tea leaves. Exported from China by the British, tea is an important element of the Sri Lankan culture ever since. Here are some of the tea tasting experiences to soothe your soul.

  • Ceylon Tea Trails
  • Kahanda Kanda
  • Dilmah private Tea Tastings
  • Handunugoda Tea Estate
