Gulmarg Travel FAQs
Can I buy Gulmarg Gondola tickets at the counter?
No. Gulmarg Gondola tickets are sold online only, on the official JKCCC portal etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com, and on-the-spot sales at the base stopped in April 2025. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for late December to February and May to June. If your date is sold out, watch for the tatkal quota released online at about 5 pm the evening before, at a higher fare.
Can I buy the Phase 2 ticket at Kongdoori?
No. Nothing is sold at Kongdoori, the middle station. Book Phase 2 online together with a Phase 1 ticket for the same date, and keep your Phase 1 booking or transaction ID handy, because the portal asks for it. A Phase 2 ticket on its own, or for a different date, will not get you onto the upper cable car.
What time should I reach the Gulmarg Gondola?
Reach the base station 30 to 45 minutes before your slot, which means about 7:30 am for the first slot. The gate opens around 8 am, Phase 1 cabins start loading at about 8:30 am, the upward gate closes around 3:30 pm and the last ride down is about 5 pm. Mornings have the shortest queues and the clearest view from the upper station, which usually clouds over after midday.
How long does the Gulmarg Gondola ride take?
Phase 1 takes about 10 minutes in the cabin and Phase 2 about 12 minutes. With queues, the change at Kongdoori and time at the top, allow 3 to 4 hours for both phases, and 5 to 6 hours on a peak-season day. Phase 1 alone with time at Kongdoori takes about 2 hours.
What happens if the Gondola is closed due to bad weather?
Phase 2 stops first in high wind, low cloud or heavy snowfall, and Phase 1 usually keeps running. Wait at Kongdoori for an hour if a hold looks short, or switch to sledging or the meadows and retry the next morning. If the Gondola is the reason you are going to Gulmarg, stay two nights so one windy day does not cost you the ride.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola safe, or scary, for kids and seniors?
Yes, it is safe, and most people do not find it scary. The cabins are enclosed and each phase takes about 10 to 12 minutes. Phase 1 to Kongdoori suits most families and seniors. Phase 2 reaches about 3,980 m (13,050 ft), so anyone with a heart or lung condition should ask a doctor first. Nervous riders can sit facing uphill, and children should be dressed a layer warmer than you.
Do I need ID for the Gulmarg Gondola?
Yes. Carry the original photo ID you used for the booking, because gate staff check it against the ticket. Every adult rider needs one, and the name on the booking must match the ID exactly. Foreign nationals should carry their passport. Keep the e-ticket saved offline as well, since mobile data near the base is patchy.
Are there restaurants at the top of the Gulmarg Gondola?
Kongdoori, the Phase 1 station, has restaurants and tea and kahwa stalls. The Apharwat station at the end of Phase 2 has one or two basic stalls for tea, coffee and Maggi at most, and little shelter from the wind. Carry water and a snack, plus cash, because card and UPI payments fail when the network drops.
What is not allowed on the Gulmarg Gondola?
Pets are not allowed on the Gulmarg Gondola, and neither are large bags, suitcases or flammable items such as lighters and stove fuel. Leave them at your hotel. Leave the drone behind too, because flying one is restricted in this border area. A small daypack with water, a snack and warm layers is all you need.
Is the Gulmarg Gondola wheelchair accessible?
Access is limited. Boarding is from a moving platform, and the stations have steps and paths that turn icy in winter. Contact JKCCC before you book to ask what assistance is available on your date. Many travellers with limited mobility stop at Phase 1, where Kongdoori has more facilities than the upper station.
