The palace in the 17th century was built as the Town Hall of Amsterdam. Cornelis de Graeff, mayor of the city, opened the Town Hall in 1655. The main architect was Jacob Van Campen, and Germany imported the yellowish sandstone to construct the building. The building later became the royal palace of King Louis Napoleon and afterward of the Dutch royal house. Royal Palace in Amsterdam, Netherlands is currently in active use by the Dutch royal family.
