How to reach Dalhousie and Dharamshala from Pathankot
Pathankot is the reason this circuit is so easy to start. It is the nearest big railhead to both Dalhousie and Dharamshala, and once you step off the train the cab takes over. No changing buses, no long transfers. Here is how travellers usually reach Pathankot, and how far the hill stations sit from it.
By train (the usual way)
Pathankot Junction and the adjacent Chakki Bank station are well connected to Delhi, Amritsar, Jammu and Chandigarh. Overnight trains from Delhi reach Pathankot in the early morning, which is exactly when you want your cab waiting so you gain a full first day in the hills. The road distance from Delhi to Pathankot is about 480 km. Our representative meets you at the station and the drive to Dalhousie begins straight away.
By road
If you prefer to drive in, Pathankot is about 480 km from Delhi on NH44, roughly a 9 to 10 hour drive, and about 240 km from Chandigarh. Many families do Delhi to Pathankot the evening before and start the hill leg fresh the next morning.
By air
There is no large airport at Pathankot itself. The nearest airports are Kangra (Gaggal / DHM), about 90 km from Pathankot and close to Dharamshala, and Amritsar (ATQ), about 110 km away with far more flight options. Travellers flying in usually land at Amritsar or Kangra and join the cab from there; tell our desk your arrival point and the pickup shifts to match.
Distances on the circuit itself are short, which is what keeps this a low-fatigue family trip:
| Leg | Approx. distance | Cab time |
|---|---|---|
| Pathankot to Dalhousie | about 80 km | about 2.5 to 3 hr |
| Dalhousie to Khajjiar | about 22 to 24 km | about 1 hr |
| Dalhousie to Dharamshala | about 120 km | about 4 hr |
| Dharamshala / McLeodganj local | under 10 km | 20 to 40 min |
| Dharamshala to Pathankot (return) | about 85 to 90 km | about 2.5 hr |
No single drive on this trip runs past four hours, and most are two to three. That matters when you are travelling with a five-year-old or a seventy-year-old.
Day-wise itinerary: Pathankot, Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Dharamshala
This is the real, walked route, not a generic Himachal template. There is no Manali or Rohtang on this circuit; it stays entirely in the Dalhousie and Dharamshala belt of Chamba and Kangra districts, which is quieter and greener than the Manali side and far kinder on young kids.
Day 1: Pathankot to Dalhousie, arrival and evening at Gandhi Chowk (about 80 km, 2.5 hr)
Your driver meets you at Pathankot station and heads up to Dalhousie, climbing through pine forest to a colonial hill town spread over five hills at around 2,000 m. Check in and rest, then walk the Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk area in the evening. The two little Scottish and Victorian churches here, St John's Church at Gandhi Chowk and St Francis Church at Subhash Chowk, are lit and quiet after dusk, and the Mall stretch has a handful of cafes and Tibetan handicraft stalls the kids can browse. Overnight in Dalhousie.
Day 2: Khajjiar and Kalatop day trip, back to Dalhousie (about 22 to 24 km each way)
The big day for the children. Drive out to Khajjiar, the saucer-shaped green meadow ringed by deodar forest that gets called the Mini Switzerland of India, with a small lake at its centre and the tiny Khajji Nag temple on one side. This is where the horse rides, zorbing balls and paragliding joyrides happen, all optional and all a hit with kids. On the way you pass through Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, a shaded deodar-and-oak forest belt where you might spot langurs and Himalayan birds. Time permitting, add Dainkund Peak, the highest point around Dalhousie with a short walk to the Pholani Devi temple and big valley views, and Panchpula, a set of waterfalls and pools with the Ajit Singh memorial. Back to Dalhousie for the night.
Day 3: Dalhousie to Dharamshala via Chamera Lake (about 120 km, 4 hr)
After breakfast the cab moves you across to the Kangra side. A common stop on the way is Chamera Lake near Dalhousie, a reservoir where you can do a short pedal-boat or motor-boat ride before the longer drive. Reach Dharamshala or McLeodganj by afternoon, check in, and spend the evening around Kotwali Bazaar or the McLeodganj main square with its momo stalls and monastery shops. On a clear evening the Dhauladhar range stands right over the town. Overnight in Dharamshala.
Day 4: McLeodganj sightseeing, Dalai Lama Temple, Bhagsu and Naddi (local, under 10 km)
A full local day around McLeodganj, the seat of the Dalai Lama. Start at the Tsuglagkhang complex, the Dalai Lama Temple and Namgyal Monastery, calm and free to enter, then walk to the Bhagsu Nag temple and the Bhagsu waterfall just above it, an easy family walk that ends at a cluster of cafes. Drive up to Naddi viewpoint for the classic Dhauladhar panorama, and stop at Dal Lake (the small Dharamshala one, not the Kashmir lake) ringed by deodars. History-minded families can add St John in the Wilderness, the 1852 neo-Gothic stone church in the forest between McLeodganj and Forsyth Ganj, and cricket fans can see the HPCA Stadium with the mountains behind it. Overnight in Dharamshala.
Day 5: Dharamshala to Pathankot, departure (about 85 to 90 km, 2.5 hr)
A relaxed last morning. After breakfast the cab drives you back down to Pathankot in time for an afternoon or evening train, or an onward flight from Amritsar. If you have a late departure, ask the driver to fit in the Kangra side on the way, Kangra Fort or the Chamunda Devi temple, both a short detour off the Pathankot road.
Khajjiar, the Mini Switzerland of India
If there is one image families carry home from this trip, it is Khajjiar. It is a wide, flat green meadow about 6,500 ft up, completely encircled by thick deodar forest, with a small green-water lake sitting in the middle and grazing horses on the grass. The Swiss comparison is not marketing invented by us; a Swiss diplomat marked it as one of the '160 mini Switzerlands' in the world back in 1992, and a plaque near the meadow still notes it. For kids it is basically a giant playground: horse rides around the rim, zorbing down the gentle slope, and short paragliding hops when the wind is right. The Khajji Nag temple on the edge is a 12th-century wooden shrine worth a ten-minute look. Because Khajjiar sits between Dalhousie and Chamba, it slots neatly into Day 2 without adding a long drive.
What you will actually see on this circuit
Here is the honest list of the stops that make up these five days, so you know exactly what the Pathankot cab covers and can tell us what to keep or drop.
• Khajjiar: a saucer meadow ringed by deodar with a central lake, plus horse rides, zorbing and the wooden Khajji Nag temple.
• Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: shaded deodar and oak forest between Dalhousie and Khajjiar, good for a slow drive and birdwatching.
• Dainkund Peak: the highest point near Dalhousie, a short walk to the Pholani Devi temple and sweeping valley views on a clear day.
• Panchpula: a set of waterfalls and pools with the Ajit Singh memorial, a quick, easy stop for families.
• Chamera Lake: a calm reservoir near Dalhousie with short boat rides, a nice break on the transfer day.
• Tsuglagkhang complex: the Dalai Lama Temple and Namgyal Monastery in McLeodganj, quiet, free and central to the town.
• Bhagsu Nag temple and waterfall: a lively temple with an easy walk up to the waterfall and a row of cafes at the top.
• Naddi: the go-to Dhauladhar viewpoint above McLeodganj, best in the early morning light.
• Dal Lake: the small deodar-fringed Dharamshala lake (not the Kashmir one), a short, shaded stop.
• St John in the Wilderness: an 1852 neo-Gothic stone church set in forest, for families who like a bit of colonial history.
Cost from Pathankot: per-person price by group size
Most Pathankot cab operators quote a single flat number and leave you guessing what your share works out to. Because the cab cost is fixed and split across the group, your per-person price actually drops as your group grows. Here is the honest breakdown for this 4N/5D circuit on twin sharing, land-only (train or flight to Pathankot is separate).
| Group / cab | Per-person price (twin sharing, land-only) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 travellers, private sedan | top of the band, around Rs 22,000+ pp | cab cost split two ways; best for couples or a parent + child |
| 4 travellers, private SUV | around Rs 19,000 to 20,000 pp | the common family size; SUV handles hill roads and luggage |
| 6 travellers, larger SUV / tempo | from Rs 18,500 pp | lowest per-head cost; two families or a joint family |
The Rs 18,500 to Rs 22,769 band reflects the hotel tier you pick more than anything else; upgrade to a deluxe or a resort with a view and the number moves up. Ask our desk for the exact live card for your dates and group size, and we will quote the lowest bookable price rather than a padded flat rate.
What the package includes
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| 4 nights hotel on twin sharing (Dalhousie 2N, Dharamshala 2N) | Train or flight to and from Pathankot |
| Daily buffet breakfast and dinner at the hotel | Lunches and personal meals outside the hotel |
| All transfers and sightseeing by private AC cab, driver, tolls and parking | Entry tickets, ropeway, horse rides, zorbing, paragliding and other activity charges |
| Pickup and drop at Pathankot station | Early check-in / late check-out charges |
| All applicable taxes | Anything caused by roadblocks, weather or flight delays, and travel insurance |
A quick word on the cab, because it is the point of this package. It is a private vehicle for your family only, not a shared coach, with the driver, fuel, tolls and parking covered. That is what lets you stop at Kalatop for photos or leave Khajjiar early if the kids are tired, without renegotiating a fare each time.
Best time for a Pathankot family trip to Dalhousie and Dharamshala
This belt is genuinely a year-round circuit, but what you get changes a lot by season. Here is the family-eye view.
| Season | Months | What it's like for a family |
|---|---|---|
| Spring / summer | March to June | The sweet spot. Pleasant 15 to 25 C days, green meadows at Khajjiar, all roads open. Peak family season, so book hotels early. |
| Monsoon | July to mid-Sept | Lush and cheap, but Himachal hill roads get landslide-prone. Doable with buffer time; not ideal with very young kids. |
| Autumn | Late Sept to Nov | Underrated. Clear Dhauladhar views, thin crowds, crisp air. Carry light woollens for the evenings. |
| Winter | Dec to Feb | Cold, 0 to 10 C, and Khajjiar can be under snow, magical for kids who have never seen it. Pack heavy woollens; some higher roads may close briefly after heavy snow. |
For most families the safe pick is April to June or October. If snow is the goal, come in late December or January and treat Khajjiar as the highlight, but keep the itinerary flexible in case a road shuts for a day.
Is this trip right for your family?
Short answer: this is one of the more family-friendly circuits in Himachal, and that is by design. Here is why, and the honest caveats.
• Low altitude, no AMS worry. Nothing on this route climbs to the altitude sickness zone. Dalhousie sits around 2,000 m and Dharamshala lower, so kids and elders are unlikely to feel the height the way they might at Rohtang or in Spiti.
• Short drives, private pace. No single drive tops four hours, and most are two to three, split across the days. The private cab means you set the pace and stop when someone needs a break.
• Plenty for kids. Khajjiar alone earns its keep with horse rides and zorbing, and there are gentle walks at Bhagsu, Naddi and Panchpula rather than hard treks.
• Meals sorted. Buffet breakfast and dinner at the hotel each day means fussy young eaters and elders always have something familiar, and you are not hunting for a restaurant after a long day.
• The honest caveat. The steep Triund trek and long high-altitude add-ons are out of scope here; keep those for an older-kids or adults-only trip. And if you are travelling in peak summer, book the hotels well ahead as this is a popular family belt.
Booking, payment and cancellation policy
None of the small Pathankot cab operators spell out a cancellation policy, which leaves families exposed if a plan changes. Here is a clear, standard frame so you know where you stand before you pay. The exact tiers are confirmed on your quote.
• Advance and balance: A part-payment confirms the booking and locks your hotels and cab; the balance is due before the trip starts. Your quote states the exact split.
• 30+ days out: cancel 30 days or more before departure for a full refund less any non-refundable hotel or transport booking already made on your behalf.
• 15 to 30 days: cancellations between 30 and 15 days typically carry a part charge, and inside 15 days a higher charge, because peak-season hill hotels bill us on short notice.
• Date changes: one free date change up to 15 days before departure, subject to hotel availability on the new dates.
These tiers are a standard frame. The exact cancellation and refund terms for your package are set out on your written quote before you pay, so confirm them there.
Why book this Pathankot family package with TravelTriangle

Himachal Travel FAQs
What is the best time to visit Dalhousie and Dharamshala from Pathankot?
March to June gives pleasant days and green meadows and is peak family season. Late September to November is quieter with clear Dhauladhar views. December to February brings snow to Khajjiar, magical for kids, but pack heavy woollens and keep the plan flexible in case a road closes briefly. The monsoon (July to mid-September) is lush but landslide-prone, so add buffer time.
How much does a 4N/5D Pathankot to Dalhousie and Dharamshala family trip cost per person?
This package starts at Rs 18,500 per person on twin sharing, land-only, and runs up to about Rs 22,769 depending on the hotel tier you pick. Because the private cab cost is split across the group, your per-head price drops as the group grows, so a family of six pays less per person than a couple. Train or flight to Pathankot is separate. Ask us for the exact live card for your dates.
Can we customise this itinerary?
Yes, every TravelTriangle package is customisable. Swap or upgrade hotels, add a Kangra Fort or Chamunda Devi stop, stretch a night in Dharamshala, or drop an activity, and our Himachal desk rebuilds the quote around your choices. The Pathankot start and the private cab stay fixed; almost everything else can flex.
Can we see the Dalai Lama Temple, and is McLeodganj worth it?
Yes. Day 4 covers the Tsuglagkhang complex, the Dalai Lama Temple and Namgyal Monastery in McLeodganj, which is calm and free to enter. McLeodganj is well worth the two nights: alongside the temple you get Bhagsu Nag and its waterfall, Naddi viewpoint, Dal Lake and a lively bazaar of Tibetan food and crafts.
What should we pack for this trip?
Light woollens and a jacket even in summer, because Dalhousie evenings turn cool; heavy woollens, gloves and caps in winter. Add comfortable walking shoes for Bhagsu and Naddi, sunscreen and caps for the open Khajjiar meadow, any regular medicines, and some cash for activity counters and small stalls where cards are not accepted.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
A part-payment confirms the booking and the balance is due before departure. Cancel 30 days or more ahead for a full refund less any non-refundable hotel or transport already booked; between 30 and 15 days a part charge applies, and inside 15 days a higher charge, because peak-season hill hotels bill on short notice. One free date change is allowed up to 15 days out, subject to availability. Your written quote states the exact tiers before you pay.
How far is Dalhousie from Pathankot, and how long does the cab take?
Dalhousie is about 80 km from Pathankot, and the private cab covers it in roughly 2.5 to 3 hours through pine forest. Dharamshala is a similar 85 to 90 km. Pathankot is the nearest major railhead to both, which is exactly why this circuit starts there: you step off the train and the cab does the rest.
Is the cab private and air-conditioned?
Yes. The package uses a private AC vehicle for your family only, not a shared coach, with the driver, fuel, tolls and parking included. A sedan suits two travellers and an SUV suits a family of four to six with luggage. Because it is private, you set the pace and stop wherever you like along the way.
Does the cab pick us up from Pathankot railway station?
Yes. Our representative meets you at Pathankot Junction (or the adjacent Chakki Bank station) and the drive to Dalhousie starts straight away. If you are flying into Amritsar or Kangra instead, tell us and the pickup point shifts to the airport.
How many days are enough for Dalhousie and Dharamshala?
Four nights and five days is the comfortable sweet spot, two nights in Dalhousie for Khajjiar, Kalatop and Dainkund, and two in Dharamshala for McLeodganj, the Dalai Lama Temple and Bhagsu. You can do it in 3N/4D if rushed, but with kids or elders the 4N/5D pace, with its short daily drives, is far easier.
Is Khajjiar included, and is it really the Mini Switzerland of India?
Yes, Khajjiar is on Day 2 as a day trip from Dalhousie, about 22 to 24 km away. The Mini Switzerland tag is real: a Swiss diplomat listed it among the world's mini Switzerlands in 1992, and a plaque near the meadow notes it. Expect a wide green meadow ringed by deodar with a small central lake, horse rides and zorbing for the kids.
Is this trip good for families with kids and elderly parents?
Very much so. Nothing on the route reaches the altitude-sickness zone, no drive runs past four hours, and the walks at Khajjiar, Bhagsu, Naddi and Panchpula are gentle rather than treks. Buffet breakfast and dinner are at the hotel daily, which keeps fussy young eaters and elders sorted. Steep add-ons like the Triund trek are left out on purpose.
