The places you will actually visit

Kufri

Kufri is a small hill settlement about 13 to 18 km from Shimla, sitting higher up at roughly 2,630 m, which is why the views back over Shimla are so wide. In winter it is one of the closest spots to Shimla for snow play and a bit of skiing. The rest of the year people come for the Himalayan Wildlife Zoo, Mahasu Peak, yak rides and tobogganing. Entry to Kufri itself is free and it stays open through the day.

Kullu Valley

The Kullu valley runs alongside the Beas river about 40 km short of Manali, and you pass through it on the drive up on Day 3. It is the adventure belt of the route: river rafting points, paragliding and trekking trailheads, plus roadside temples and the shawl factories the valley is known for. The deodar-clad slopes and the open river make it the prettiest stretch of the whole drive. Entry is free and the main viewpoints are open through the day.

Vaishno Devi Temple, Kullu

On the banks of the Beas near Kullu, this Vaishno Devi temple (also called Mahadevi Tirth) is a short, calm stop many travellers add on the drive. Entry is free and it is open around the clock. It is a quiet, low-key visit rather than a headline attraction, worth 20 minutes if the timing works on your Day 3 drive.

Solang Valley

Solang, about 14 km beyond Manali, is where Day 5 goes. In winter it is snow, skiing and snowmobiling; in summer it turns into a paragliding, zorbing and ropeway hub. The gondola ride gives you the valley from above. Adventure activities here are paid on the ground and are optional, so you choose how much you do. Entry to the valley is free and it is busiest late morning to evening.

Day 1: Arrival in Shimla

Day 5: Full day in Solang Valley

After breakfast, spend the day in Solang Valley, the adventure hub about 14 km from Manali. Depending on the season you can ski, ride the ropeway, try paragliding, zorbing, horse riding or a yak ride, all paid on the ground and optional. If you want to go higher, Rohtang Pass sits beyond Solang and is subject to a permit and seasonal opening (usually May to November, weather permitting). The Atal Tunnel, the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft, opened here in October 2020 and gives all-weather access through to Sissu and the Lahaul valley if you add that leg. How you travel from Delhi, and the best time to go

Most travellers on this route reach Shimla from Delhi by road. You can take an overnight Volvo AC coach or a private AC cab; the Delhi to Shimla drive is roughly 350 km and 7 to 8 hours, and the onward Shimla to Manali leg is about 248 km and 8 hours, both handled on this package by private transfer. If you would rather come by train, the option is a train to Kalka followed by the toy train or a road transfer up to Shimla; Kullu and Manali are reached by road from there. Flights are not part of the land price; the nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar (Kullu), about 50 km out.

On timing: March to June is the summer sweet spot, green valleys, clear days and pleasant hill weather, and it is the busiest booking window. October brings crisp air and thinner crowds. If snow is the whole point, aim for December to February, when Kufri and Solang are white and Rohtang access depends on the road being open.
