Itinerary

Day 1: Mumbai to Kochi by Flight, Drive to Munnar via Valara and Cheeyappara Falls

Take the morning non-stop flight from Mumbai to Kochi, about 1 hour 50 minutes in the air. Your driver-guide meets you at the arrivals gate with a name board, and you head east towards the Western Ghats. The road climbs past Valara and Cheeyappara Falls, which drop right beside the Kochi to Munnar road and run fullest from June to December. Most drivers also stop at a spice garden near Adimali, where pepper vines and cardamom grow on the same slope and you can buy both fresh. You reach Munnar by late afternoon and check in. The evening is yours, so walk down to the town market or book a tea-tasting session.

Athirappilly Falls is not on this route. It is a detour of 2 to 3 hours north via Chalakudy, so add it only if your flight lands early.

Day 2: Munnar Sightseeing, Eravikulam and Mattupetty

After breakfast, head to Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, an endangered mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. The rest of the day covers the Tata Tea Museum, the Rose Garden, Photo Point, Mattupetty Dam, Elephant Arrival Point and Echo Point. The Indo-Swiss dairy project can be visited only with prior permission.

Eravikulam usually closes in February and March while the tahr calve. In those weeks your guide swaps it for Top Station or the Kolukkumalai tea estate, and entry tickets anywhere are paid on the spot. In the evening you can watch a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance at one of Munnar's cultural centres, about an hour long and paid separately. Day 3: Munnar to Alleppey, Private Houseboat Night

After breakfast, check out and drive about 5 hours down the ghats to Alleppey. You board your houseboat at the Punnamada finishing point around noon, and lunch is served soon after. The afternoon cruise takes you through the lakes and canals, past paddy fields and village jetties. By about 5:30 pm the boat anchors for the night, because houseboats must stop cruising after sunset. Dinner is cooked on board and you sleep on the water. The boat is private to your group. On a premium boat the AC runs whenever you want it. Deluxe boats run it from about 9 pm to 6 am.

Day 4: Alleppey to Kochi Airport, Flight to Mumbai

Have breakfast and proceed to check out from the houseboat by about 9 am. Tell the crew the night before and most will make appam with vegetable stew. Your driver then heads north to Cochin International Airport, about 85 km or 2 to 2.5 hours away. If your return flight leaves after 4 pm, there's time for a short detour into Fort Kochi for the Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront, St Francis Church and the spice shops of Jew Town in Mattancherry. You are dropped at the airport at least 2 hours before your non-stop flight back to Mumbai, and you're home the same evening.
