4 Days 3 Nights Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight Volvo, Delhi to Manali

Your Rohtang trip starts the evening you board. The Volvo AC coach pulls out of Delhi around 5 pm, so you sleep through the plains and wake up to pine forest with the Beas running alongside the road. It is roughly 530 km and 12 to 14 hours by the Kiratpur to Manali four-lane, with a couple of stops for tea and a stretch. Keep a light fleece in your day bag. The cabin gets cold once the bus climbs past Mandi. There is no sightseeing today, and that is the point. The overnight run saves you a full day and a hotel night, so you reach Manali fresh instead of losing a morning to the drive.

Day 2: Manali arrival and local sightseeing

You reach Manali mid-morning. Check in, take an hour to freshen up, then head out with the private cab for the classic Manali circuit. First stop is the Hadimba Devi Temple, a 16th-century cedar-wood shrine set in a deodar grove. From there it is a short drive to Vashisht, where the hot sulphur springs run into stone bathing tanks beside the temple. In the afternoon you visit the Tibetan Monastery and the handicraft centre, then walk the old Vashisht village lanes. Wrap up at Van Vihar and the Mall Road, which is where you buy the Kullu shawls and caps everyone takes home. Dinner is at the hotel, and you turn in early because tomorrow is the big day.

Day 3: Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley

This is the day you came for. After breakfast you drive up towards Rohtang Pass, and the first proper stop is Solang Valley, about 13 km from Manali. Solang is the adventure hub, with paragliding off the slope, zorbing down the grass, and a ropeway that opens up wide Dhauladhar views. Push higher and the road climbs past Gulaba and Marhi to the snow line. Rohtang Pass sits at 3,978 m and holds snow well into summer, so this is where you get the snow play, the photos and the thin, clean air. If the pass is closed or you would rather skip the altitude, the Atal Tunnel gives you an easy no-permit run to Sissu on the Lahaul side. Back to Manali for the night.

Day 4: Departure, Manali to Delhi

After a slow breakfast you check out and board the Volvo back to Delhi. The coach usually leaves Manali in the late afternoon or evening and runs overnight, dropping you in Delhi the next morning. If you have an onward flight or train, keep a comfortable buffer. The mountain leg down to the plains can run late in heavy weekend traffic. That closes out the 4 days and 3 nights, with two nights in Manali and the long, easy Volvo legs at each end.

Best Time to Visit Rohtang Pass and Snow Points

Rohtang Pass is seasonal, and the month you go changes the whole trip. The pass is usually open from May to early November, once the Border Roads teams clear the winter snow, and shut from late November to April when it is buried. If snow is the whole reason you are going, mid-May to June is the sweet spot: the pass is open and there is still deep snow at the top for sledding and photos. July and August bring green meadows but also monsoon landslides, so keep the day flexible. September and October give you clear skies and thinner crowds.

When the pass itself is closed or full, the snow points below it still deliver. Solang Valley holds snow through winter and runs skiing in January and February. Gulaba, about 20 km up from Manali, is where the administration often sends visitors for snow when Rohtang is shut. Marhi, the last dhaba stop before the final climb, is another reliable snow point. Between the three, you rarely come back without your snow day.

Rohtang Permit, Tuesday Closure and Travel Rules

Rohtang Pass sits inside a protected zone, so a few rules decide whether your day works. Every vehicle needs a permit, applied for online at the official Himachal portal (rohtangpermits.nic.in), and there is a daily cap on how many vehicles are allowed up, so it is booked a day or two ahead in peak season. Our operator arranges the permit for the sightseeing cab. The permit fee and green tax are not in the package price, so budget roughly Rs 500 to 600 per vehicle.

The pass is closed every Tuesday for maintenance, so the Rohtang day is planned for any other day of the week. On a Tuesday the itinerary shifts to Solang, Gulaba and the Atal Tunnel side instead, which still gives you snow and views without the pass. The Atal Tunnel, opened in October 2020 and 9.02 km long, needs no permit at all and drops you into the Lahaul valley at Sissu, a clean fallback when Rohtang is shut. Carry a photo ID for every traveller, since permits are issued against ID.
