Day 1: Delhi to Shimla road trip

Your trip starts in Delhi, where our agent or driver meets you and sets off on the drive up to Shimla, about 343 km through Chandigarh on NH5. Day 2: Shimla sightseeing day

After breakfast, spend the full day on Shimla’s colonial heart. Begin at Jakhu Temple, set on the town’s highest hill at about 2,455 m, where a 33 m Hanuman statue rises above the deodars and the whole city spreads out below. From there move to The Ridge, the wide open promenade that the British used as a meeting place, with the neo-Gothic Christ Church of 1857 at one end and the restored Gaiety Theatre alongside. Browse Lakkar Bazaar for its wooden toys and craft, then walk Mall Road past Scandal Point, the Mall’s famous corner and its busiest shopping stretch. If you have time and the kids are game, add the Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill or the Himachal State Museum. Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Kufri excursion and back to Delhi

After an early breakfast, drive out to Kufri, about 16 km east of Shimla and a firm family favourite. This is where children queue up for pony and yak rides, and where the Himalayan Nature Park and the high Mahasu Peak viewpoints look straight onto the snow line on a clear day. On the way you pass through Green Valley, a dense deodar forest stretch that makes a good photo stop. How to Reach Shimla From Delhi and the Best Time to Go

• By road. Shimla is about 343 to 350 km from Delhi via NH5 through Chandigarh, a 7 to 8 hour drive. This package uses a private cab for the door-to-door transfer; overnight HRTC and private Volvo buses run the same route from ISBT Kashmiri Gate if you travel separately.
• By rail. Kalka is the nearest broad-gauge railhead, about 90 km from Shimla and reachable by Shatabdi or the Himalayan Queen from Delhi. From Kalka you can ride the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train, a 96 km narrow-gauge climb of roughly 5 to 6 hours, or take a road transfer for the last leg.
• By air. Chandigarh (IXC), about 113 km and 3.5 to 4 hours away, is the practical fly-in point. Shimla’s own Jubbarhatti airport (SLV) sits about 22 km from town but has very limited flights.

Best time to visit. March to June is peak season, with pleasant 15 to 30 degrees C days that are ideal for Kufri and long walks on the Ridge, so book early. Late December to February brings the cold and the best chance of snowfall, especially at Kufri, so carry heavy woollens. July to September is green and cheaper, but rain can slow the Kalka road, so keep a buffer day.
