How to Reach Shimla from Delhi

Shimla has no direct broad-gauge railway and only a small airport, so the road is how nearly everyone actually gets there from Delhi. Here is what each option really costs you in time and money.

By road (Volvo or private cab)

This is the default and the reason a Shimla trip from Delhi is so easy to book. The route runs Delhi to Chandigarh to Kalka to Shimla on NH5, about 350 km. A private cab takes 7 to 8 hours with a paratha stop at Murthal; an overnight AC Volvo from ISBT Kashmiri Gate runs 9 to 10 hours and drops you in Shimla around dawn. HRTC and private operators both run this route nightly, with seat fares roughly Rs 900 to Rs 1,700 each way. By train (via Kalka and the toy train)

There is no train straight to Shimla. You ride a fast train from Delhi to Kalka, the most popular being the Kalka Shatabdi (12005) at about 4 hours, then switch to the Kalka Shimla toy train for the last leg. That narrow-gauge line is a UNESCO World Heritage route: 96 km, roughly 5 to 6 hours, through more than 100 tunnels and over 800 bridges and viaducts. It is slow on purpose and worth doing at least one way for the views. In a hurry, a taxi covers the same Kalka to Shimla stretch (about 90 km) in 2.5 hours.

By flight

Shimla's own airport at Jubbarhatti (SLV) sits about 23 km from town but has very limited, weather-dependent service, so few Delhi travellers use it. The practical air route is a short flight to Chandigarh (IXC), then a 110 km, 3.5 hour drive up to Shimla. Flying rarely beats the overnight Volvo on either cost or convenience for this route, which is why most from-Delhi packages are road-based.

Places to Visit in Shimla on Your Delhi Tour

Shimla sits at about 2,200 m across seven hills, and most of its landmarks are close enough to string together over three or four days. Here is what earns a place on a Delhi-to-Shimla itinerary.

Mashobra and Naldehra, roughly 13 and 22 km from town, are the quieter green alternatives, Naldehra built around one of India's oldest golf courses. Further afield, Chail (about 45 km) has the palace built by the Maharaja of Patiala and the world's highest cricket ground, while keen travellers push on to Narkanda for apple orchards and early-season skiing.
