How to reach Shimla from Raipur

Raipur sits in central Chhattisgarh, and Shimla sits at 2,200 metres in the western Himalayas, so the two are not linked by any single flight or train. Every sensible route goes through a northern gateway, either Delhi or Chandigarh, and then climbs into the hills by road or by the narrow-gauge toy train. Here is how each option works, and which one this package uses.

By air, then Volvo through Delhi (this package)

Fly from Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur (RPR) to Delhi, roughly an hour and three-quarters in the air. From Delhi the package puts you on an overnight air-conditioned Volvo coach to Shimla, about 370 km and 9 to 10 hours through the Shivalik foothills, so you sleep on the road and wake to the hills. This is the routing built into the price, and it is why the trip needs only four days.

By air via Chandigarh

Prefer to travel by day? Fly Raipur to Chandigarh (IXC), the closest major airport to the hills. From Chandigarh, Shimla is about 113 km and a 3.5 to 4 hour drive up the National Highway. This trades the overnight coach for a shorter, daytime climb, and it is the fastest way to stand on the Ridge.

By the Kalka-Shimla toy train

For the classic arrival, break the trip at Kalka. There is no direct broad-gauge train from Raipur to Shimla, so you would rail to Kalka first, then join the Kalka-Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line that winds about 96 km through 100-odd tunnels over roughly 5 to 6 hours. Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Raipur to Shimla, overnight on the road

Your trip begins the evening you leave Raipur. After the short flight to Delhi, you board the overnight Volvo coach that carries you up towards Shimla. The coach is air-conditioned with reclining seats, so the climb through the foothills passes while you rest. You reach Shimla the next morning, which is why the package spends its days in the hills rather than on connections.

Day 2: Arrival and Shimla sightseeing

Shimla greets you with cool air and pine. After you check in and freshen up, the afternoon is for the colonial heart of town: the Ridge, the neo-Gothic Christ Church that has stood over it since 1857, Scandal Point and the long pedestrian stretch of the Mall Road. Walk up to the Kali Bari temple for the view, and if your legs are willing, climb to the Jakhoo temple with its giant Hanuman statue on the town's highest ridge. Evening is free on the Mall for coffee and shopping.

Day 3: Kufri excursion and Green Valley

After breakfast you drive out to Kufri, a small resort spread at about 2,600 metres that Shimla locals treat as their winter playground. The road there runs past thick deodar forest and opens at Green Valley, one of the most photographed stops on the route. In season you can ride up towards Mahasu Peak and look across at the Wildflower Hall ridge and Fagu. You are back in Shimla by evening for a last night on the Mall.

Day 4: Departure

After a relaxed breakfast and check-out, you rejoin the Volvo for the descent to Delhi, then connect to your Raipur flight. If you have two or three more days, this is the natural point to extend towards Manali and the Kullu valley rather than heading straight home.

Shimla is a year-round hill station, and the right month depends on what you want. March to June is peak season, with days around 15 to 30 degrees, clear skies and Kufri at its greenest, ideal for a first visit. December and January bring the cold and, in a good year, snow at Kufri and Fagu, which is the draw for travellers who have never seen it. July to September is the monsoon, when the hills are lush and rates are lowest, but book flexibly because rain can slow the ghat roads. Since Raipur travellers pay for a flight leg either way, the March-April and September-October shoulder weeks give the best mix of weather and value.
