Beautiful hills of Shimla

Shimla Tourism, Himachal Pradesh

Rated 4.20/5 ( based on 10839 reviews )

About Shimla

Shimla is the Queen of the Hills, the summer capital the British carved into a Himalayan ridge in the 1800s and still the most visited hill station in North India. This travel guide covers what to see, when to go, how to reach it from the plains, and the Shimla tour packages you can book and shape around your own dates. The old town runs along The Ridge and Mall Road, where Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre and rows of colonial buildings look much as they did a century ago. Step off the promenade and you reach the ski slopes at Kufri, the Green Valley viewpoints on the Kufri road, and the pine trails around Jakhoo, Summer Hill and Chadwick Falls. The town sits at about 2,200 metres, so summers stay cool and winters bring the snow that fills the streets from December. Shimla is part of our wider Himachal travel guide, and pairs easily with Manali, Kufri and Chail on a longer trip.

Shimla at a glance (TravelTriangle booking data)

These figures come from how travellers actually book Shimla with us, not a brochure. Our team confirms them against live data before each update.

What travellers book Typical pattern
Most-booked months May to June (summer) and December to January (snow)
Average trip length 3 nights / 4 days
Most common pairing Shimla with Manali (and a night in Kufri)
Average traveller rating 4.2 / 5 from verified travellers
Most popular package type Family trips and couple / honeymoon getaways

Best Time to Visit Shimla

Shimla works in every season, but what you get changes completely between summer green and winter snow. Snowfall usually begins in late December and lasts through February, so book those weeks if seeing snow is the point of the trip. April to June is the busy summer window when the plains are baking and Shimla stays pleasant. If you want a Shimla with fewer crowds, come in October or early November after the monsoon clears. For a full snow-season breakdown, read our guide to Shimla in winter.

Season Months Weather Good for
Summer Apr to Jun Pleasant 15 to 30 C Sightseeing, paragliding, escaping the plains
Monsoon Jul to Sep Wet, misty, some landslide days Green valleys, lower prices, fewer crowds
Autumn Oct to Nov Clear and crisp, 10 to 20 C Photography, quiet walks, clear mountain views
Winter Dec to Feb Cold, minus 1 to 10 C, snow Snowfall, skiing at Kufri, ice skating

Places to Visit in Shimla

Most of Shimla sightseeing sits within a short drive of Mall Road, which makes it easy to cover the headline sights in a couple of days. For a longer list with photos, see our companion piece on the best places to visit in Shimla.

Christ Church

Christ Church on The Ridge is the second oldest church in North India, built in neo-Gothic style in the 1850s. It is still an active place of worship, lit up after dark, with services in Hindi and English. The stained-glass windows and the ridge-top setting make it the picture most people carry home from Shimla.

Naldehra

Naldehra, about 22 km from the town centre, has a nine-hole golf course laid out by Lord Curzon in 1905, one of the oldest in India, ringed by deodar forest. It is an easy half-day trip when you want quiet and green instead of the Mall Road crowds.

Annandale

Annandale sits at about 6,227 feet, roughly 2 km from the railway station and 5 km from The Ridge. The flat valley ground was Shimla old racecourse and cricket field under the British, is now maintained by the Army, and holds a small army heritage museum and a golf course.

Chadwick Falls

Chadwick Falls drops through thick deodar forest below Summer Hill. It runs thin for much of the year and full right after the monsoon, reached by a short downhill trek through dense woodland that is really the draw here.

Summer Hill

Summer Hill is one of the seven hills Shimla stands on, a quiet suburb on the Kalka toy-train line where Mahatma Gandhi stayed at Georgian House. It is a good starting point for the walk down to Chadwick Falls.

More sights worth your time

  • Jakhoo Hill, Shimla highest point at about 8,000 feet, crowned by a 108-foot Hanuman statue and reached on foot from The Ridge or by ropeway.
  • Kufri, 16 km out, with the Himalayan Nature Park zoo, an adventure zone and winter skiing.
  • Kali Bari Temple and Kamna Devi Temple, two hilltop shrines with wide valley views.
  • Tara Devi Temple, a forest hilltop temple reached by a short trek or by the toy train to Tara Devi station.
  • Mashobra and Naldehra on the Shimla apple-belt road, good for a slow drive and orchards.

A Mall Road heritage walk: Scandal Point, Gaiety Theatre and the Viceregal Lodge

The stretch from Scandal Point to the Viceregal Lodge is the best half day in Shimla for anyone who likes history under their feet. Start at Scandal Point, the open junction where The Ridge meets Mall Road, named for a legendary elopement tale and now the spot where the whole town seems to meet. Walk the pedestrian Mall past the Gaiety Theatre, a restored 1887 Gothic playhouse that still stages shows and lets you look inside its Victorian auditorium. Carry on to the Viceregal Lodge, also called Rashtrapati Niwas, the 1888 residence of the British viceroys on Observatory Hill that now houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Its lawns, rose garden and guided interior tour are open on a small ticket, and this is the building where several decisions on India 1947 partition were taken.

Things to Do in Shimla

Beyond the sightseeing, Shimla fills a trip with small experiences, from a heritage train ride to a day on the snow. For more ideas, browse our list of the best things to do in Shimla.

Ride the Kalka to Shimla toy train

The narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of only a handful of mountain railways in the world to hold the listing. The 96 km line climbs through more than 100 tunnels and 800-odd bridges in around five to six hours, and the slow, curving ride past pine slopes is a Shimla experience in its own right, not just a way to arrive. The Shivalik Deluxe and Himalayan Queen are the ones to look for.

Ski and skate at Kufri

When the snow settles from late December, the slopes around Kufri turn into a beginner-friendly ski patch, and Shimla itself runs one of the oldest natural ice-skating rinks in India near the town centre. Both are seasonal and depend on the snow, so check conditions before you plan a day around them.

Shop at Lakkar Bazaar and Mall Road

Lakkar Bazaar, just off The Ridge, is the place for the wooden handicrafts Shimla is known for, along with Kullu shawls, pashmina, Tibetan carpets, dry fruits and woollens. Mall Road carries the bigger brands and the cafes, so the two together make an easy evening on foot.

The Shimla Summer Festival

For ten days across May or June, the Summer Festival takes over The Ridge with folk performances, local craft stalls and evening concerts. If your trip lands in early summer, it is worth timing an evening around it.

Paragliding, trekking and camping

Paragliding runs at Waknaghat through the summer months for 360-degree views over the valley. Short walks like the Tara Devi and Jakhoo temple treks suit families, while Shoghi and Narkanda are the go-to bases for a night under canvas. For longer trails, see our notes on trekking near Shimla.

Suggested 2-Day Shimla Itinerary

Two nights is enough for a first Shimla trip, and it maps neatly onto a weekend. Here is how our travellers usually spend it.

Day 1: The Ridge, Mall Road and heritage walk

Settle in, then walk The Ridge for Christ Church and the valley views. Do the heritage stretch from Scandal Point past the Gaiety Theatre to the Viceregal Lodge, then spend the evening shopping and eating along Mall Road and Lakkar Bazaar.

Day 2: Kufri, Green Valley and Jakhoo

Drive out to Kufri for the Himalayan Nature Park and the adventure zone, stopping at the Green Valley viewpoints on the way. Come back for a late-afternoon climb to Jakhoo Temple and the Hanuman statue for sunset over the hills.

Have three or four days? Add Naldehra golf, a day trip to Chail, a night in Kufri, or push on to Narkanda for apples and snow. The simplest way to fit it all in is a ready, customisable Shimla tour package where you set the days and hotels.

How to Reach Shimla

By air

The nearest airport is at Jubbarhatti, about 22 km from Shimla, with limited Alliance Air flights from Delhi that take under two hours. Most travellers instead fly into Chandigarh, the nearest major airport, and drive the last 110-odd km up to Shimla by taxi or bus.

By train

The famous route is the UNESCO-listed Kalka to Shimla toy train, a 96 km narrow-gauge climb of roughly five to six hours with stops at Dharampur, Barog, Solan and Kandaghat. You first reach Kalka, the broad-gauge railhead, on an overnight or day train from Delhi, then change onto the toy train or a taxi for the final leg.

By road

Shimla is about 340 km from Delhi, a drive of roughly seven to eight hours on NH44 to Chandigarh and then NH5 into the hills, and only 110-odd km from Chandigarh. HRTC and private Volvo buses run through the night from Delhi, Chandigarh, Kullu and Manali, which makes the bus the easiest budget option.

Where to Stay in Shimla

Shimla splits neatly into budget stays around the Mall and cottage suburbs, and heritage or resort properties a little out of the centre. Confirm rates and availability directly before you book.

Budget and mid-range

Hotel Sanskar, Dolphin Cottage Homestay, Hotel Surya and Hotel Shimla View sit close to the town centre and suit families and first-time visitors who want to be near Mall Road.

Premium and resorts

Evoke Shimla Heavens Resort, Zurich Resort, the heritage Woodville Palace Hotel and the Radisson Hotel Shimla give you more space, views and quiet a short drive from the crowds. These are the ones our honeymoon and family packages lean on.

Shimla Tour Packages

Every one of our Shimla tour packages is customisable. You pick the days, the hotel tier and the sightseeing, and a verified local agent quotes a single price with stays, transfers and a driver bundled in. Prices below are starting, per-person indications and shift with season and hotel choice.

Why Book Shimla With TravelTriangle

Every package is quoted by a verified local agent who knows the Shimla roads, not a call centre, so the plan matches the season you are travelling in. Our team checks each itinerary and the toy-train and snowfall timings against ground conditions before it goes out, because a snow week and a summer week in Shimla are two different trips. Across the Shimla trips booked with us in the last 90 days, families and couples make up the bulk, and the reviews below are from travellers who actually took the trip.

Reviewed by our Himachal travel desk for accuracy on routes, seasons and toy-train timings.

    Shimla Travel FAQs

When does snowfall start in Shimla?

Snowfall in Shimla usually begins from December and lasts till the end of February.

What is the best time to visit Shimla?

The best time to visit Shimla is from March to June. During these months, the weather is pleasant and comfortable for sightseeing. All tourist places are open, road conditions are good, and travel is smooth. This time is suitable for families, couples, and first-time visitors. Travel Triangle recommends this season for a stress-free and well-planned Shimla trip.

What is the best way to reach Shimla?

Most travellers fly into Chandigarh, the nearest major airport, and drive the last 110-odd km to Shimla. From Delhi you can take an overnight train or Volvo bus to Kalka and then the UNESCO-listed toy train for the scenic final climb, or drive the full 340 km in seven to eight hours. Limited Alliance Air flights also land at Jubbarhatti, 22 km from town.

How much does a Shimla tour package cost?

Starting prices for our Shimla packages run from about Rs 999 for a short 2-day stay to Rs 8,999 and up for a 4-day honeymoon trip, per person, depending on the hotel tier and season. Every package is customisable, so the final quote depends on your dates, hotels and sightseeing. You can compare live, bookable options on our Shimla tour packages page.

What are the top things to do in Shimla?

Ride the Kalka to Shimla toy train, walk The Ridge and Mall Road for Christ Church and the Gaiety Theatre, and do the heritage stretch up to the Viceregal Lodge. In winter you can ski and ice-skate at Kufri, and in summer paraglide at Waknaghat. Shopping at Lakkar Bazaar and a sunset climb to Jakhoo Temple round out most trips.

What are the best places to visit near Shimla?

Kufri (16 km) for snow and the nature park, Chail for the palace and high cricket ground, Naldehra for golf, and Narkanda and Mashobra on the apple-belt road are all easy day trips or overnight add-ons. For more options, see our guide to the hill stations near Shimla.

How many days are enough for Shimla?

Two nights covers the town itself, The Ridge, Mall Road, the heritage walk and a Kufri day. Three or four nights lets you add Chail, Naldehra or Narkanda without rushing, or combine Shimla with Manali on a longer Himachal loop, which is how most travellers book it.

Can I customise a Shimla family or honeymoon trip?

Yes. Every itinerary is fully customisable, from the hotel tier to the day-by-day sightseeing and add-on stays in Kufri or Manali. Tell the agent whether it is a family holiday or a honeymoon and you get a single quote with stays, transfers and a driver included.
