By road (the route this package follows)

The trip starts with the overnight run from Delhi to Shimla, about 343 km and 9 to 10 hours by Volvo or private vehicle, usually boarding in the evening from ISBT Kashmere Gate. From Shimla, your private SUV takes over and heads up the Hindustan-Tibet Highway (NH-5) through Narkanda and Kinnaur. This is the spine of the tour, so you are on the scenic road for the whole circuit rather than a single long haul.

By air

By train

Take a train from Delhi to Kalka, about 4 to 5 hours, then either the heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train, a scenic 5-hour narrow-gauge ride, or a quicker road transfer up to Shimla, where the SUV circuit begins.

8-Day Spiti Valley Itinerary From Delhi

The route follows the Kinnaur valley up to Spiti and exits the Manali way, so you cross the region end to end and never double back. Each overnight below matches the stays listed further down.

Day 1: Delhi to Sarahan via Shimla and Narkanda

Your tour begins with the overnight departure from Delhi. After the run up to Shimla, meet our driver and drive on through Narkanda and the apple country of the Sutlej valley to Sarahan, a quiet hill town at about 2,200 m known for the Bhimakali temple. This first easy day of altitude sets up the gradual climb ahead. Check in at Sarahan, and spend the evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Sarahan.

Day 2: Sarahan to Sangla Valley

After breakfast, drive deeper into Kinnaur to the Sangla (Baspa) Valley, one of the greenest stretches of the whole trip. The road runs beside the Baspa river past pine slopes and terraced fields to Sangla town at about 2,700 m. There is time in the afternoon to walk the old Kamru fort and village or simply take in the valley. Dinner and overnight in Sangla.

Day 3: Sangla to Chitkul, then Kalpa

Drive up to Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the old Indo-Tibet trade road, sitting at about 3,450 m where the Baspa runs clear and cold. Spend the morning here, then head to Kalpa, a village facing the Kinner Kailash range across the Sutlej gorge. The late-afternoon light on the peaks from Kalpa is the reason many travellers rate this their favourite stop. Dinner and overnight in Kalpa.

Day 4: Kalpa to Nako and Tabo

Today the landscape turns from green Kinnaur to the bare, folded rock of Spiti. Drive past Reckong Peo and along the Sutlej to Nako, a high village of about 3,600 m built around a small lake, then continue to Tabo. Tabo is home to a 1,000-year-old monastery often called the Ajanta of the Himalayas for its wall paintings. Check in at Tabo. Dinner and overnight in Tabo.

Day 5: Tabo to Dhankar and Kaza

After breakfast, drive to Dhankar, where an old fort-monastery clings to a spur above the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers, with a short walk up to Dhankar Lake for those who want it. Carry on to Kaza, the main town of Spiti at about 3,800 m and the base for the next two nights. The rest of the day is kept easy to help you settle into the altitude. Dinner and overnight in Kaza.

Day 6: Kaza and the high villages

A full day around Kaza and the highest inhabited plateau in the valley. Visit Key Monastery, the largest gompa in Spiti stacked above the river like a fort, and Kibber, one of the highest villages reached by a motorable road. Cross the Chicham Bridge, the highest in Asia, and take in Langza with its hilltop Buddha and fossil fields, Komik, among the highest villages on earth, and Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office where you can send a postcard home. Return to Kaza for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 7: Kaza to Chandratal over Kunzum Pass

Drive out of Spiti over Kunzum Pass at about 4,590 m, the high gateway between Spiti and Lahaul, stopping at the Kunzum Devi temple that travellers circle for a safe crossing. From there a rough side track leads to Chandratal, the crescent Lake of the Moon at about 4,300 m against the Chandrabhaga range. Overnight at the Chandratal camp under some of the clearest night skies in the country.

Day 8: Chandratal to Manali over Rohtang, trip ends

After breakfast and a last look at the lake, drive down through Batal and Gramphu and over Rohtang Pass into the greener Kullu valley, reaching Manali by evening. Your Spiti Valley tour ends here. Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley From Delhi

Spiti's roads only open for part of the year, so timing your trip out of Delhi matters more than for a normal hill holiday. The Kinnaur road this package follows usually clears by May, and Kunzum Pass and the Chandratal camp open around June and stay driveable into September or October. So May to October is the window, with June, September and early October giving the best mix of open passes and clear skies.

July and August bring the monsoon to the lower Shimla and Kinnaur hills and can trigger landslides on the approach, though Spiti itself sits in a rain shadow and stays largely dry. From November to April the passes close and Spiti becomes a specialist winter trip reachable only as far as Kaza from the Shimla side, which is not what this package covers. Altitude, Acclimatisation and Safety

Spiti is high country. Kaza sits at about 3,800 m and you cross Kunzum Pass at about 4,590 m, so mild altitude effects like a headache, breathlessness or broken sleep are common in the first day or two, even for fit travellers. The Kinnaur route this tour uses is built to reduce that risk, gaining height over several days from Sarahan to Sangla to Kalpa to Tabo before Kaza, rather than the abrupt Manali-side jump.

Give yourself the best start: drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol for the first two days, and do not rush the high-village day on your first morning in Kaza. If you take Diamox, start it a day before the climb after checking with your doctor, and anyone with a serious heart or lung condition should get medical advice before booking.
