How to Reach Spiti Valley From Pune (Route, Distance & Time)

There is no direct flight, train or bus from Pune to Spiti Valley. The practical route is a two-leg trip: fly Pune to a north-India hub (Delhi or Chandigarh, or a seasonal hop to Bhuntar), then travel by road into Spiti through Manali. Reaching Kaza from Pune realistically takes the better part of two days, which is why a guided package that pre-arranges the transfers and stays is the low-stress way to do it.

By air (the route most Pune travellers take)

Fly from Pune (PNQ) to Delhi (DEL) in about 2 hours or to Chandigarh (IXC) in a little over 2 hours. From either city it is a road journey up to Manali, then on to Kaza. A limited seasonal flight also connects Delhi to Bhuntar (KUU), the Kullu-Manali airport that this package uses as the pickup point, which shortens the road leg considerably when it is running.

By train

If you prefer rail, an overnight train from Pune reaches Delhi or Chandigarh, from where the mountain leg is the same road drive to Manali and on into Spiti. There is no railway station near Spiti itself, so a road transfer is unavoidable on the last leg.

By road

The mountain section runs Manali to Kaza via the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass, about 200 km that takes 8 to 9 hours because of the terrain, not the distance. The alternative approach is the Shimla to Kinnaur route via Kalpa and Nako, which stays open longer in the shoulder season. Step by step, from Pune to Spiti

• Book the Feb to June window well ahead of your travel month. The best road access is short, so seats and hotels fill early.

Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley From Pune

6-Day Spiti Valley Itinerary From Pune

Day 1 begins where your flight from Pune lands. Days 2 to 6 run the Manali to Kaza to Chandratal loop, ending back at Kullu for your flight home.

Day 1: Fly in from Pune, arrive Manali

Fly out of Pune and connect to Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar) airport, where our executive meets you and transfers you to your Manali hotel. On arrival in Kaza, check in, eat well and rest, because the altitude and the next day both ask a lot of you.

Day 3: Kaza sightseeing, monasteries and high villages

A full day around Kaza. Drive up to the Key Monastery, the largest in Spiti, stacked like a fort above the river. Visit Kibber, one of the highest villages connected by road, then Komik, whose name means the eye of the snow cock, and the fossil village of Langza with its giant Buddha looking over the valley. If time allows, Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office, and the Chicham Bridge sit on the same high plateau. Return to Kaza for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Kaza to Chandratal Lake

After breakfast, check out and drive toward Chandratal, the Lake of the Moon, recrossing Kunzum Pass on the way. Chandratal sits at around 4,300 m and is one of the most striking lakes in the Himalayas, named for the crescent shape of its shoreline. Check in to the Chandratal camp, spend the evening around the bonfire, have dinner and rest under one of the clearest night skies in the country.

Day 5: Chandratal to Manali
