By air (the route most travellers use)

There is no nonstop from Chennai to Shimla, and Shimla's own small Jubbarhatti airstrip has almost no scheduled service. The practical way is to fly Chennai (MAA) to Chandigarh (IXC), about 3 hours direct or with one stop, then cover the 111 km to Shimla by road in 3.5 to 4 hours. A common alternative is flying Chennai to Delhi and continuing by overnight Volvo or the toy train from Kalka. March to June is Shimla's main season from Chennai.
