About Alibag

Alibagh literally implies Garden of Ali and is located in the Raigad district of the Konkan region. Alibagh is one of thefavourite getways for the inhabitants of Mumbai. Many business conferences are also frequently held here. Some people own farms and cottages which are located at a few hundred metres from the sea shore. Since Alibagh is surrounded on\three sidesby sea it is often called the Goa of Maharashtra. Alibagh was developed by the naval chief of Shivaji during the 17th century. The city became prominent after Chhatrapati Shivaji built the fort of Kulaba here.
Nestled in the lap of nature Alibagh is a maritime town of India. The town is well known for its clean and unpolluted waters, silvery beaches and unadulterated air. Alibagh is a highly alluring spot for its visitors owing to aesthetic surroundings. Alibagh is placed on the southern tip of Mumbai and is situated 3 hours away from Mumbai by road and 1 hour by ferry.
Alibagh is a tropical island with palm beaches. The various orchards and chikoo trees render the place clean and unpolluted. The beauty is at its zenith during monsoon time.
The nearest railway station is Pen which is 28 km away from Alibagh. The nearest airport is at Mumbai which is 113 km away.
Khanderi Fort is 3-4 km into the sea and was constructed in 1678. It was under British control for a long time. The fort canbe visited by local boats with the permission of the Mumbai port trust.
Kolaba Fort was constructed by Shivaji and is located 2km inside the sea. It has a sweet water well adjacent to which is a Ganesha temple.  The fort is 300 year old. It has many temples along the guns which face the sea. One can see carvings of tigers, peacocks and elephants on the entrance.
The fort of Undheri is located 300m away from Khanderi and is an island fort. It was built by Siddi Qasim in 1680.
Akshi beach is a beautiful white sand beach. The water is clean and is ideal for swimming. The beach is a favourite among bird watchers and nature lovers.
Alibagh beach is the famous tourist destination having the blackest sand among all beaches. The beach is extremely lively and vibrant.
Brahma Kunda is a rectangular tank encased on four sides. It is a beautiful site and the site is excellent for photography. There is a small MarutiMandir in its vicinity.
Kihim Beach is 12 km away from Alibagh and is an excellent place for nature lovers. The beach is famous for thick cover of coconut trees. The atmosphereis highly attractive and unpolluted.
Nagaon beach is 7km away from Alibagh and is famous for coconuts and betel nuts. The beach is covered with suru trees and one can indulge in many water activities like parasailing, banana boats and jet ski rides.
On the outskirts of Alibagh Versoli beach is situated. The sand is white and the sea water is clean and clear. The vegetation abounds in coconut and casuarina trees.
Mandwa beach is 20 km north of Alibagh and ferry services can be utilised from Mumbai. Mandawa is an outstanding and untrodden beach.
Kanakeshwar Devasthan Temple is 13 km from Alibagh. The temple is on a 900 m high hill. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva and one has to climb 5000 stairs in order to reach the temple. The height of the lord is 54 feet.
