Travel To Australia

Rare and unique animal species like the marsupials, long stretches of limestone formations and dusty beaches, beautiful beaches with breathtaking sunsets and of course, the Great Barrier Reef has made Australia a very popular tourist destination. People travel from India to Australia to explore the natural bounty, the opulent urban cities and to embrace the Yuletide season in the warmth of summer.

How to reach from India

The best and the only way to travel to Australia from India is by flight. Since the country is an island right in the middle of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with no land connection with any mainland of Asia, there are no roads or railway network between the two countries. There are no cruise routes to go from India to Australia either. In fact, there are not many India to Australia direct flights to avail. However, there is one Delhi to Australia flight, which disembarks at its busiest airport in Sydney that is the direct and fastest route one can avail.

Australia has at least ten airports spread across the country that operates internationally. Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport and Melbourne Tullamarine airport are the main airports in Australia. Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Gold Coast Airports can be travelled to as well. From each of these airports, the other cities are well-connected with further domestic flights, suburban railway system, local buses and cabs. Here are different transport routes on how to get to Australia from any Indian city.

By Air

Average India to Australia distance by air is around 5000 km, but it can change by a margin depending on which city one is flying in from. It is difficult to pinpoint India to Australia flight time because there are multiple flights from multiple Indian cities to multiple Australian airports. Most of the flights are of a one-stop variety. They have layovers at the South-east Asia region, like Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong before making their way to Australia. One of the only India to Australia flights which are non-stop is operated by Air India and flies from Delhi to Australia. It takes 12 hours 25 minutes India to Australia flight duration to travel from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Sydney Airport. Other carriers with India to Australia flight routes are Jet Airways, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon, Thai Airways and Australia’s flag bearer Qantas Airways. Thai Airways’ 13 hours 30-minute flight from Kolkata to Sydney with an hour and a half stop at Bangkok is the other best option.

By Train

There are no railway links between India and Australia. But once again, one can use the Countrylink-operated railway network within the country. Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Alice Springs, Perth and Adelaide are well-connected by both Ghan and India-Pacific links. Indian-Pacific connects Sydney-Adelaide-Perth, The Ghan connects Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin, and The Overland connects Melbourne-Adelaide routes.

By Road

There is obviously no way to go from India to Australia by road. One must reach Australia by air first to any of the cities with an international airport and then drive to the other cities. There are local buses and cabs available from the airport itself. However, the distance between cities like Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide is quite a lot. Instead of taking the roadway, one can easily go for domestic flights. It is much better and quicker option for tourists unless one specifically wants to go for the long drive along the Pacific Highway. For self-drive, the tourists must have International Driver’s License.
