  • Siliguri to Thimphu
3800000000000001; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 10pt;">Kolkata may be the capital of West Bengal, but Siliguri is the main town in the north of the state. Siliguri is the nerve center of all the transportation system in the north-eastern part of India. Bhutan too is well connected with Siliguri, being located just north of West Bengal, sharing international borders. Going from Siliguri to Thimphu is very easy and simple, and there are enough transport options to avail from. Here’s how to go to Thimphu from Siliguri via different transport modes.

By Air: Siliguri to Thimphu flights are there to avail the air route between the two cities. The closest airport to Siliguri is the Bagdogra Airport, which is only 23 minutes’ drive away. There are weekly flights operated by Bhutan’s national carrier Druk Air to Paro Airport in Bhutan. Thimphu does not have an airport of its own. Paro is the only international airport Bhutan has. After landing in Paro from Siliguri, one can take a car or bus ride from there to Thimphu, which takes nearly 1.30 hour.

By Road: Siliguri to Thimphu distance in total is 322 kilometers, which can be traversed by road in either car or bus. There is Siliguri to Thimphu bus service from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminal at the city center. One can also hire car rentals for a trip from Siliguri to Bhutan by road. The roadway from this side of India goes into Bhutan via the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing border. The visitors have to get their identity documents and permissions checked before entering Bhutan. But for Indians, there is no need for a visa or passport.

By Rail: Going from Siliguri to Thimphu by train is not exactly possible. However, a large portion of that journey can easily be covered by railway. The closest stations to both Bhutan border and Siliguri are Hasimara and New Alipurduar. From both of these places, there are taxis and autos to reach Jaigaon. Crossing the Phuentsholing border, one can take another transport to make the 5 hours journey to Thimphu.

Bobby's 4 days trip to Thimphu

I had specifically asked for 4 star properties and was quoted amount for the same. Lemon Tree thimpu is a 3 star property as per google and other major websites and Lemon Tree manager also said it is a 3 star property. Valley Travels passes it off as a 4 star Property. In Paro we were changed from Tashi Namgay, a 4 star property to tiger's Nest at the last minute. Tiger's Nest is a very old Property without proper plumbing and very far off from Airport as well as city center.

Ketan's 6 days trip to Thimphu

It was a good experience with BINC Bhutan. They provided Good hotels with upgrades wherever possible. All good places were recommended and covered. Very effective co-ordination by BINC team which made the visit very smooth and hassle-free. Some facts not in control of the agents - No role of the compulsory guide-not worth, most of the places have high entry fees (mostly not worth keeping in mind the place). Someone visited Sikkim/North-East may find Bhutan similar to that, so not all places are worth-visiting. Overall good experience. I recommend BINC.
