Famous Festivals Celebrated in Thimphu

Thimphu Tshechu Festival: Thimphu Tshechu Festival is the most popular festival that is celebrated in Thimphu every year from 7th Oct to 9th Oct. During this festival al the local people dressed in colorful attires take part in the festivities. A lot of cultural events are held during this time along with masked dance performance.

Paro Tshechu Festival: This is another Thimphu festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the local people. It is celebrated during the month of March during the springtime where people dressed in colorful attires enact the mythological stories of Buddhism and they also showcase the religious stories about 350 years old.

Jambay Lhakhang Drup: This is another iconic festival celebrated in Thimphu where cultural dances are performed along with famous fire dance for celebrating the foundation of Jambay Lhakhang Monastery. Climate in Thimphu

Summer Season in Thimphu

In summer, the Thimphu temperature varies between 15°C to 30°C throughout. Although the latter parts of summer are drenched in the early south-western monsoons, the beginning of it is as pleasant as it gets. Bhutan in April is pretty as a picture, with the warmth of the sun just setting in and the rhododendrons covering the valleys with their bright red colours. Thimphu, located on a lower altitude than the northern parts, experiences quite a warm and sunny temperature as the spring advances well into summer. Bhutan weather in April still has a slight chill in the air and the temperature is around 10°C. This is actually the best time to visit the city. Thimphu weather in May is probably the hottest, till the monsoon clouds blow into the Bhutanese sky.

Monsoon Season in Thimphu

Typically during the summer months, Thimphu experiences the monsoon season. Running from May to September, showers from the Southwest Monsoon winds, ensure warm and relatively humid climate. During this time, it is not quite the best place to travel, as continuous days of rainfall ensure that the hilly region suffers from landslides. Thimphu weather experiences moderately high temperatures in the morning and the comparatively lower temperatures at night. Following the wet season, the rest of the year in Thimphu is considerably dryer, as autumn enters the region. For anyone with a Thimphu travel guide, they are aware that Thimphu weather in September and October is favourable for tourists. Visitors have clear skies and can enjoy the beautiful scenery in the region, with the temperature hardly ever crossing more than 20 degrees. The bitter cold of winter does not set in yet, making it pleasant climate for trekking.

Winter Season in Thimphu

For those with a sporty attitude, winter is a good time to visit Thimphu as well. If a person enjoys solitude, then Thimphu weather in December, though cold, is not something cannot be tolerated. The temperature varies between -5 to 10 degrees throughout the day, and although it may go below that, on particularly cold nights, it remains a good time to visit. The only problem of Thimphu in winter is that with the onset of winter, in late November, December, January and February, the roads face the problem of fog, making it a dangerous time to travel at night. Although snowfall in Thimphu is not that common, there are some during the Yuletide season.

    • Trip to Thimphu

Hotels : All hotels Bhutan was good. The hotel in Thimphu was so far from city the we had to pay separately for cabs to commute to city if needed. However, in Paro (Sinchula villa) was not clean and services were not great. Powring guest house in gangtok was good. Marvel international in darjeeling was the worst of all.. The room was unclean and the location was such that we had to carry our luggage to the hotel as the cab drivers resisted to come to hotel. The cab drivers were asking money directly or in directly at times. Travel agent services were good except that i was promised for a innova to Nathula pass but we were made to go in Alto. The agent has also promised to pay back extra money which was given to cab driver during darjeeling city tour since he asked for it. Every place was covered except a very few of them.. So it was a good experience overall.

    • Trip to Thimphu

I booked my Travel plan through Traveltriangle.com and was service by Bhutan Govt Authorized "Bhutan INC" Travel Agency. Initially I was skeptical whether I should pay up 3 installments, since I had no clue the agency existed or not, since there address were not showing up in Google maps. Later on after interaction with Hari I felt all ok. Mr Hari was extremely helpful and was available most of the time on whatsapp to answer any query. He arranged nice set of two double rooms for my 4 adult plus kid. The Itinerary was planned well and Car was available as expected and I never felt any issue in Bhutan. My Trip was from 20-May-2019(Mon) to 26-May-2019(Sun) - Day1 at Hasimara Stantion to Phuentsholling, stay at Hotel Tseringma, Day2- Travel to Thimphu via Gedu Chhukha, Day3 - Thimphu singhtseeing and then travel to Punakha via Dochu La Pass, Day4 - Punakha Dzong, Suspension Bridge and then travel to Paro via Dochula Pass, Day5- Haa Valley via Chele La Pass, Day6 - Tigers Nest Hike, Day7-return to Hasimara Station. Our complete travel plan was organized well and we enjoyed our stay at Bhutan. Hotel Tseringma (Phuntsolling) was good, Hotel Dhey Kyid(Thimphu) was nicely located in Clock Tower Square, Hotel Yak Herder Boutique Inn (Punakha) was nicely located besides river, Hotel Kuenphen (Paro) was a good hotel. Our chauffeur Mr Wangchuk was extremely helpful and a very nice person who made our travel very comfortable. He helped us to get the Permit, he helped up during Tigers Next entry when Locker was full and he kept my Bag, and he arranged all things for travel well. Thanks to Mr Prakash of Bhutan INC who arranged our Punakha and Haa Valley restricted Permit obtained at Thimphu, without any trouble to us. Overall I am very much satisfied with BhutanINC and to TravelTriangle for letting me get in touch with BhutanINC. Note: You may search for my name and Bhutan Travel and will find video of my Bhutan travel in youtube.

    • Trip to Thimphu

We, me and my wife, started exploring for our summer trip and we choose to visit Bhutan after reading amazing experiences of travellers and tourists of Bhutan. I wrote to some renowned travel agency in Bhutan and requested them to share the itinerary with price quotation. I also thought of writing to one Indian travel agency and chose Travel Triangle due to my past experience with them. I was surprised to see the price difference, Bhutan INC (also listed with Bhutan Tourism Council) through Travel Triangle offered almost 1/3 to 1/2 of the prices quoted by other agencies in Bhutan. The other agencies were offering some additional value like tickets to monuments/museum, complimentary hot stone bath and better car for transfer from Bagdogra to Bhutan and from Bhutan to Bagdogra. I did my math, and the value of additional services was not more than 10K. The price quoted by Bhutan INC was very reasonable, I think, if you try to book hotels, vehicle, guide and airport transfer on your own, you would end up paying equal or maybe higher amount with all the hassle. I also read the reviews about Bhutan INC and I was certain to book my trip through them only. Hari form Bhutan INC was my single point of contact, he was always reachable to answer my any and all the questions. We finalised the itinerary for our 7 days trip in discussion with him and he almost covered all the places and destinations given by other agencies in their itinerary. I also read about hotels in different cities we were planning to visit and gave a list to Hari, he got us all the hotels I requested. I have explained about the hotels separately below. We were all set to visit Bhutan and planned to visit Phuentsholing, Thimphu, Paro and Punakha. We planned our Trip from 16th May to 22nd May. I requested Hari to share the cab details for airport transfer and here Prakash from Bhutan INC joined the journey. He shared the cab details 1 day prior to our flight, I read some reviews and people got jittery due to delay in sharing of cab details, but trust me guys, everything is taken care of. Day 1: 16th May We landed at Bagdogra, Mr.Nima was our driver for transfer to Bhutan was already there at the Airport. He received us at the Airport and we started our journey in his WagonR. The road quality from Bagdogra to Phuentsholing (Bhutan border town) is good. Only at some places or for very short length you would get a bumpy ride. We covered the journey in 4.5 hrs including a stop at Dhaba. After 30-40 mins of reaching the hotel, we were surprised to know that our guide Tshering Wangchuk (later we started calling him shri) was there to meet us. He was there to collect our docs for next day immigration clearance. We had a yummy dinner at Asian Kitchen (Must try Zumzin wine and egg fried rice) Day 2: 17th May As promised our guide was on time, 8:30 in the morning. We also met our driver Tobten. We went to immigration office for clearance and it took us 2 hrs approx. as I was travelling on voter ID, because my Passport got expired. Here one thing I want to point out; Indians can travel to Bhutan on Passport or Voter Id. But with passport you can apply for e-permit and get your immigration clearance really quick. I saw many people with Indian passport, but they didn’t apply for e-permit and spent a long time in the queue. After clearance we headed towards Thimphu, we skipped visit to Kharbandi Gonpa due to paucity of time. On our way to Thimphu we passed through Gedu, Chukha and Chuzom. We had our lunch at Gedu but it was expensive in comparison to Phuentsholing. After reaching Thimpu, we visited Memorial Chorten. It is built in the memory of 3rd King, but with due respect not a great place to visit since entry in the structure is not allowed. There is no point paying Rs. 600, you can see the structure from outside road. Later we checked into our Hotel. We had dinner at Cloud9 café, it’s a bit expensive and you’ll get pizza and burger to eat with beverages or alcohol. Day 3: 18th May After having breakfast at Hotel, we visited Buddha view point (152 ft Buddha statue, highest in the world), Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the valley, Simply Bhutan – A living Museum (must try Bhutanese lunch here). We left for Punakha and stopped at Dochula pass to visit Druk wangyel Lhakhang, here if you are lucky and sky is clear, you may see highest unclimbed mountains in Bhutan and the Kanchenjunga. After reaching Punakha, we checked in our resort and had dinner in the resort only. Day 4: 19th May We started our day with Chhimi Lhakhang (temple of Fertility), it is situated in a village and you may find yourself in odd situation, if you are with your elders. You’ll see phallus (the male sexual organ) paintings or small wooden replica on the way to the temple. We also visited Punakha Dzong and Punakha Suspension bridge before departing for Paro. We reached Paro via Thimphu only and had our lunch at “Fulka”, a decent option for Indian food. We checked in our Resort in Paro which was very close to Tigers Nest base and had Dinner in the Resort only. Day 5: 20th May The most special day of our trip, hike to Tiger’s Nest. It was really challenging and fun activity, since the altitude is fairly high (almost 3000 meters), you’ll feel breathless while hiking. It is quite a physical activity; if you want to hike this, move up at your own pace. You might need a break after every 2-3 mins hiking. Try not to have heavy breakfast right before the hike. You should carry water bottles or you can buy from cafeteria en-route to the Nest. Please wear full sleeves, continuous sun and shadow may cause skin burn. Put-on good sports shoes or hiking shoes, you need good grip while going up and specially coming down. We took 6 hrs to complete the hike, visit to temples and tea/coffee at the cafeteria. We skipped other site seeing for the day and had rest after the hike. Day 6: 21st May After checking out of the hotel, we went to National Museum; there is a good view point, you might see landing or take off the plane from Paro Airport. We skipped going to Paro Dzong, since our guide suggested it was same like Punakha Dzong. We went for shopping to Paro market. It is very expensive, especially the woollen stuff. It is advisable to explore few shops before buying and negotiate hard, there is significant difference in the prices for the same product. We had our lunch at traveller’s restaurant and headed to Phuentsholing. We had our dinner at Kizom Cafe and Pizzeria, some people find it expensive, but it is cheaper than food outlets at the Airport and food is really delicious. Day 7: 22nd May We had to reach Bagdogra Airport by 11 am and Mr. Nima assured us of timely pickup, the cab reached on time and we reached Airport in 4 hrs without any stop on the way. Hotel: Day 1 and Day 6– Damchen Hotel, Phuentsholing The hotel is decent 2 star facility, it is in the centre of the city, close to market and right opposite to Zangtho Pelri. You’ll get good eating options nearby and a public park right opposite the hotel. You won’t feel like in a hotel room, but it is clean and breakfast is good. They also packed our breakfast on last day as we had to check out by 6 am to reach the Bagdogra Airport. Day 2 – Galingkha It is a good 3 star hotel in the centre of city. The room feels of higher standard but the wooden floor was sticky and looked unclean. It is very close to market. The drawbacks are; the food in the hotel is very bad, we tried Hakka Noodles and it was Yuk. The on street dogs can be sleep spoiler during night time. Day 3 – Meriphuensum Resort The best resort/hotel of the whole trip. It is located at height in serene environment. You’ll get private balcony attached to your room and view of river is amazing. It is a 3 star resort but the service is higher standard. The food was good and breakfast was elaborated. Only minus is you would be out of town and can’t visit local market, but there is not much to visit in Punakha town. Day 4 and Day 5 – Taktsang Boutique Resort After Meriphuensum, I had very high hopes from this resort but sadly it was not that amazing. The room was really good, we got the deluxe room. It is located very close to Tiger’s Nest base and surrounded by forest. The food here is good, especially the non-veg is really delicious (best of the trip). Minuses are; you won’t feel like in a resort, deluxe room is just outside the welcome hall so you get all the noises and the outer sitting area attached to the room is not private. Bhutan INC It was a wonderful experience and value for money service. As I have already mentioned, Hari was always available to resolve my queries. Prakash continuously checked with me about the arrangements during the trip. I strongly recommend Bhutan INC for future tourists, you can thoroughly enjoy your trip and let Bhutan INC worry on your behalf. Guide and Driver I saved best part for the end, our Guide Tshering Wangchuk and Drive Tobten made this trip most memorable. They always maintained that host-guest relationship and gradually we were like friends, it was really fun with them. Tshering had good knowledge about Bhutan, monuments/sites we visited and he was honest, if he didn’t know anything. You can’t ignore his good sense of humour and he would always create the moments full of laughter. He was very sensible also to give us our space. We made him learn Punjabi songs and during Tiger’s Nest hike he was humming the Punjabi music in his Bhutanese accent. Tobten has graduated from India, he has good knowledge about India; be it bollywood, cricket, politics, places etc. and we connected with him very easily. He was always calm and courteous and showed us many places significant in his life. We chatted at length with him and you feel happy after interacting with him. He was never in hurry, drove (Hyundai Santa Fe) really safe and always asked, whether he was going too fast. Even after so much travel and physical toil, we truly wished, the trip could be longer. These two guys made our trip and we wish to meet them again in future.

    • Trip to Thimphu

The trip was really well arranged. Himavat Travels was really helpful. From the starting by hotel booking till we reach back home, they were continuously in touch. Himanshu from himavat was specially very much helpful. All the steps were taken care very professionally. Only one small concern was the hotel in Thimphu. The first hotel was not at all at 2 star level. But it was taken care of very fast. All over really great experience. I would again come back for my next trip. I am really impressed. Also a special thanks to Varun from travel triangle for all the help. Can’t point out anything special. But the scenic beauty of Bhutan is gorgeous. It’s literally the heaven on earth. Although I really enjoy the Dzong visit at Punakha. The scenes were extraordinary.

    • Trip to Thimphu

Travel to Bhutan with Bhutan Inc was a wonderful experience. Bhutan is a beautiful country with amazing people. We had booked our flights on our own and with help of Travel Triangle finalized Bhutan inc as our agent. We interacted with Mr.Hari who was available anytime and answered all our queries, adjusted our hotels as per our needs. On reaching Paro airport, we were picked up by Mr. Rinchen in Hyundai H1, which we requested. He was very very helpful throughout our trip, took good care of us. Hotel Namseling in Thimphu was very good and close to the craft bazaar. Rooms were neat and breakfast good, more than that the people running the hotel were amazing. In Punakha we stayed at Damchen resort in a beautiful location on banks of a river. However the food was not good, especially breakfast. We stayed at Soenam Tsokhang resort in Paro. It was located far from Paro but rooms were good, food was very good and again amazing people are running the place. They took care of us very well. I would recommend travelling to Bhutan with Bhutan inc.
