Strahov Library In Prague, Czech Republic
Witness the incredible at Strahov Library
Rated 3.50/5 ( based on 10 reviews )
About Strahov Library In Prague
The Strahov Library is situated in the Strahov Monastery. The monastery was built after Jindrich Zdik visited the holy land and wanted to found a monastery. The monastery was first made of wood and later replaced with stone structures before being renewed after a fire in 1258 heavily damaged the monastery.
The Strahov Monastery Prague was also damaged during the Hussite wars and was plundered. The monastery was given new life by abbot Jan Lohelius and he reconstructed church, renewed old buildings and built dormitories. He made sure that the monastery had enough material base to sustain itself. The Strahov Library came into being after one Jeronym Hirnheim became the abbot in 1670. The Theological hall was completed in 1679. Incorporated into the Memorial of National Literature in 1950, the library has a huge variety of manuscripts and first prints, making it the biggest monastic library in the world.
Tourists are not allowed to enter the halls at this magnificent library because it was found that their breath was harming the frescos. However, tourists can peep into the doors and witness the incredible work. While the library consists of a large number of manuscripts and fine prints, one can also find artefacts and remains of various animals and aquatic creatures. Other amazing items include gem studded codex from the 9th century, figurines and corpses. The architecture and frescos are worth the visit.
