After being buried in the Volcanic ash of the catastrophic eruption that occured in the year 1613 BC, the Ancient city of Akrotiri in Greece was excavated fairly recently in the year 1967 and has been a major tourist attraction that appears on almost all the must visit lists of all travellers.

This age old Minoan city is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, the Akrotiri archaeological site is housed within a protective structure with wooden walkways that allow you to explore the ruins here from close. You can explore the three story high buildings that have survived along with the precisely planned drainage systems and well preserved stashes of pottery. Akrotiri town is also located nearby but at times can be overlooked by those who visit the Akrotiri Island, since the road to the Archaeological site does not pass through the town. The narrow peninsula boasts of two pristine and charming Akrotiri Beaches, Red Beach and Vlychada. Tourists also enjoy a visit to the Caldera Beach located inside the crater of the volcano. Many local tourists like to spend their Holidays in Akrotiri in Santorini, weekends and such since the air is clean, the food is fresh and the beaches here are not so crowded.

One of the most valuable things found here in Akrotiri archaeological site was a horse statue made of gold but hollow from inside proving that this civilization was much more advanced in their artistic ways than any other of that age.
