About Santorini Tourism
Famed for its jaw-dropping landscapes, destinations weddings, beautiful sunset views, and an active volcano, Santorini is a perfect holiday destination for an explorer. With a bounty of other offerings, including multi-coloured beaches, hot springs and a lot more, Santorini tourism is something one can’t afford to miss out on! Santorini Island is as blue as the Aegean Sea where it is situated and even more beautiful in real than its pictures. Part of the famous Cyclades Archipelago southeast of Greece on the uninhabited region of Delos, known as the birthplace of Greek God Apollo, this place is home to some of the most exquisite locations you will see in a lifetime, and also some of the best archaeological ruins.
History of Santorini:
Built over the ancient city of Thera, the city of Santorini has one of the beautiful histories about the struggle between human and nature. The island used to be the capital of the Minoan Civilization; however in around 1500 B.C., the city became prey to one of the most ferocious volcanic eruptions in the human history, and people emerged as true fighters while finding ways to survive in that terrible situation. Post that, the island got resettled around the 9th century, and got its Christian identity under the Byzantine kingdom. And later, it got its name ‘Santorini’ by Western European Catholic Crusaders.
Best Cuisines in Santorini:
Being a traveller’s true delight in every sense, Santorini serves many delicious cuisines to treat your taste buds to a tantalizing experience. When you are on an excursion to this enticing destination, do gorge on some of the best cuisines, like: Fava me Koukia, Tomato Gefthedes, Saganaki, Roasted Greek Lamb, Moussaka and more. To savour the sumptuous delicacies, stop by the famous restaurants, Selene, 1800, Ginger Sushi, Nichteri and some other food joints.
Honeymoon in Santorini:
While on an escape amids the iconic whitewashed houses in Santorini with your partner, you can have one of the amazing times of your life. Enjoy a honeymoon sojourn here while enjoying luxury, jumping off into the Mediterranean waters, cherishing the breathtaking sunsets, and snapping some splendid views that will leave an imprint on your soul for life. To make the most of your honeymoon, take our recommendation and do visit to places, like: Oia, Imerovigli and Fira villages for magnificent architecture and picturesque views, the world-famous Red Beach, Cape Columbo Beach and more.
Major Festivals in Santorini:
Fond of art, the locals of Santorini are always eager to combine their love for this enticing island, and celebrate it with quite fervour through numerous cultural events and festivals. As you hop on a voyage to this magnificent place, grab a chance to attend events and festivals, such as Ifestia, Santorini Jazz, International Music Festival and more.
Beaches in Santorini:
It is the collection of mesmerising beaches that has made Santorini travel such a romantic thing to do with your partner. They are different than your usual sun and sand beaches. Here, they are red or black because of volcanic activities of centuries, often cut-off with towering cliffs on one side. The Red Beach is the most spectacular one of Santorini beaches, and the water here is warm like hot springs. Two beaches Perissa and Kamari are located side by side in the southeast of the island, separated by the enormous rock Mesa Vouno. Both of them have dark greyish-black sand and have great arrangements for water sports. Visit Cape Columbo for the most isolated and serene beach on the island and visit Perivolos for the most happening one.
Museums in Santorini:
For an island of 76 sq km, Santorini has some brilliant museums to flaunt. The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is one of the most important in entire Greece. The Archaeological Museum of Fira reflects the history and evolution of human settlement in the island, while the Naval Museum of Oia highlights the glorious maritime past of Greek Navy. Do not miss the Wine Museum and the change to get to know the past and present of the legendary local wine. You will get to taste some as well.
Here are the best places you must visit to during your holidays in Santorini.
1. Fira:
Fira, pronounced as Thira, is the beautiful capital of Santorini, Greece and is dotted with aesthetically pleasant series of blue and whitewashed houses, terraces, cafes, souvenir shops and little squares amidst winding lanes. Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Museum of Prehistoric Thira displaying paintings, ceramics and many collections dating back to the Bronze Age.
2. Caldera:
About some 3600 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption blew off the centre of the island and caused a crater which the sea later filled-in with the brilliant blue water. The Caldera and the lake it formed still experiences volcanic activities in the Kameni Islands at its centre, where there are hot springs. Cruising in the Caldera is a not-to-miss attraction of Santorini tourism.
3. Red Beach:
Red Beach looks exactly what its name suggests. Walled up on one side with a colossal red cliff and the blue water of Aegean on the other side, Red Beach is the premier seaside location – which is saying something given the whole of Santorini Island, Greece is an island.
4. Akrotiri:
Near the Red Beach is the archaeological site of the Akrotiri settlement, which got buried under the volcanic lava and ash in the 16th century BC. Studies and excavations show that Santorini was home to a flourishing civilization, with probable trade relations with Africa and other countries. You can see most of its findings in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. However, the actual site here, near the modern Santorini village of Akrotiri, is a sight to behold.
5. Ancient Thera:
Located on the southeast coast, Ancient Thera dates back to the 9th century BC. There are remnants of both Hellenistic and Roman architecture, as well as some early-Byzantine ones. If you have seen some of them in the museum in Fira, then visiting this site will make it a complete circle.

By Air
If you draw a straight line on the map, Santorini location is 5438 km away from India. But airlines from India do not follow this route. There are no direct flights to Santorini from India. In fact, there are no direct flights to Athens either. However, the Santorini National Airport located in Kamani village, which is well-connected to Athens and other places in Europe, provides regular flight services. Flights from Delhi or Mumbai take at least 10 hours 30 minutes to reach Athens and that too via some other city in Europe. Turkish Airlines, Gulf Air, Etihad and Qatar have the best flights to Athens. From the Greek capital, you can get cheap flights to Santorini operated by Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways. In good weather conditions, the flights take around 45 minutes to reach. The peak season has more than 10 flights to Santorini every day. In July and August, one can fly in from Thessaloniki as well.
By Sea
Piraeus port in Athens has regular ferries to Athinios port of Santorini everyday. This is a much easier option than air travel, and the fare of ferries is also less than air tickets to Santorini. There are at least 4 ferries between Athens and Santorini in the summer months. Fares are between 20-70 Euros. The two best options are Blue Star and Hellenic Seaways. Blue Star leaves at 7:25am every day of the year and takes 8 hours to reach Santorini via some other islands like Paros and Naxos. It is more luxurious, and during the peak season have night ferries on three nights of the week. Hellenic Seaways have a daily ferry leaving at 7am just like Blue Star. This one is much faster and takes only 5 hours, but the ride can be really bumpy. Many Mediterranean cruises go via Santorini as well.
