    10.0 hours

Dalhousie is about 560 km from Delhi by road, a drive of roughly 10 to 12 hours on NH44.

The town has no railway station and no airport of its own, so there is no direct train or flight all the way. The cheapest is an overnight HRTC or Volvo bus from Kashmere Gate ISBT, roughly 12 to 14 hours. By air the straight-line distance is about 452 km.

Dalhousie is a colonial-era hill station in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, spread across five hills on the edge of the Dhauladhar range. For most travellers leaving Delhi it is a long-weekend escape, reached overnight by bus or in a single day's drive. Here is every practical way to cover the Delhi to Dalhousie route, with real distances, timings and rough costs for each.

Delhi to Dalhousie by Road

By road Dalhousie sits about 560 km from Delhi. Some navigation apps route you 570 to 590 km, depending on where you join the highway. Take NH44 out of Delhi through Ambala, Jalandhar and Pathankot, then switch to NH154 and the hill road that climbs to Dalhousie. Reckon on 10 to 12 hours of driving with two or three breaks. Murthal, about an hour out of Delhi on NH44, is the usual first food stop. Self-drive suits travellers who want to pause at Khajjiar or Chamba on the way. The final climb after Pathankot is narrow and slow after dark, so most drivers leave Delhi before dawn to reach Dalhousie in daylight.

Delhi to Dalhousie by Bus

The bus is the most economical way to reach Dalhousie from Delhi. Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) and Himachal Tourism run daily services from Kashmere Gate ISBT, alongside private Volvo operators. The ride is long, roughly 12 to 14 hours, and almost all services run overnight, so you reach Dalhousie by morning. Fares range from about Rs700 on an ordinary bus to Rs1,400 to Rs1,600 on an AC Volvo. Book a sleeper or semi-sleeper Volvo a few days ahead in peak season (April to June and December to January), when seats sell out fast. Buses set down at the Dalhousie bus stand near Subhash Chowk, a short walk from the main market.

Delhi to Dalhousie by Train

There is no direct train to Dalhousie, because the town has no railway station of its own. The nearest railhead is Pathankot, about 80 to 90 km away and well connected to Delhi by several daily trains. Faster services such as the Rajdhani and the superfast expresses cover Delhi to Pathankot in roughly 8 to 9 hours. From Pathankot, a taxi or shared cab to Dalhousie takes about 2.5 to 3 hours over 80+ km of hill road. This rail-plus-road combination is a comfortable, budget-friendly choice, especially for families travelling with luggage or children.

Delhi to Dalhousie by Air

Dalhousie has no airport, so flying means landing at the nearest one and driving the rest. The closest airport is Pathankot (about 85 to 90 km), followed by Kangra (Gaggal / DHM, about 120 km) and Amritsar (about 200 km). From Delhi you depart Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) on a short flight of around an hour to Pathankot or Kangra, then take a taxi for the final 2.5 to 3 hours up to Dalhousie. Flying is the fastest way to reach Dalhousie overall, about 6 to 7 hours door to door, and also the priciest. It works best when you are short on time or travelling from beyond Delhi.

Dalhousie to Delhi (the Return Journey)

The same routes run in reverse. Overnight HRTC and Volvo buses leave the Dalhousie bus stand in the evening and reach Kashmere Gate by morning, roughly 12 to 14 hours. If you are flying home, drive down to Pathankot or Kangra for the Delhi flight and allow about 3 hours for the descent plus airport check-in. Self-drivers usually leave Dalhousie by mid-morning to clear the hill section in daylight and reach Delhi the same night. For trains, take a taxi to Pathankot and pick up a Delhi-bound express from there.

Kaushik's 8 days trip to Dalhousie

Except for goofup done by travel agent for my stay at Dalhousie hotel it was fair. In this instance I was provided make shift arrangement in another hotel of lower class and pathetic condition. The reason I got for this goofup was funny “ it was operations team problem” , although I followed up on all my hotels booking well in advance before my actual trip and got positive revert. The main problem was at time when I was about to deduct charge for a day stay in this makeshift hotel. Besides their manager (lady) , Mr. Lokinder Verma from this travel agency was very rude to talk and was not in a mood to understand my problem, although I did paid extra for accommodations of hotels as per my choice. Would recommend everyone, do not rely on any verbal confirmation for your hotel bookings confirmation prior to your trip, especially with this travel agency. Car driver was very good and had best knowledge about the entire sites, that made my site seeings more easy and comfortable.

Hardeep's 4 days trip to Dalhousie

Our trip to dalhoussie from 26-28 January was organized by miss Lata Verma. Trip was quite joyful. Great customer service by miss Lata Verma. Never made me feel left out. She accomodate all our genuine requests and made it a point to call us everyday & check on our experience. This is the exactly, the kind of customer service i was hoping for. She appointed us driver named Tilak Raj. It is said that driver is also your guide and he proved it at all. His friendly behavior and amazing driving skills made our trip so good. Although we couldn't visit khajjiar due to heavy snowfall and road block but way to khajjiar was still worthy. About Hotel : The chosen hotel "Hotel Mohan Palace" under the package was best. Rooms were excellent, more than our expectations. The view from hotel was mesmerizing especially sunrise and sunset. Staff was very humble and friendly especially Sonu and Ramesh from room service. Hotel's open terrace is great to enjoy the beauty of Dalhousie. Hotel provide us complimentary DJ with bonfire at night. That was really enjoyable. Food was good especially breakfast. Our 2N 3D stay at hotel Mohan Palace became memorable. So overall it was an awesome, unforgettable experience, well coordinated by miss Lata Verma & especially thanks to our driver Mr. Tilak Raj. Whenever we will plan our next trip, we will definitely contact you. Thanks Travel Takies. Way to khajjiar Hotel Mohan Palace terrace
