The bus is how most people actually get from Delhi to Kullu, and it is the option this page leans into because it is the cheapest, runs every day of the year, and is the only genuinely direct way to reach the valley without changing vehicles.

The route runs roughly 362 km via Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Mandi, and the government and private overnight coaches leave in a cluster through the evening so you sleep on the road and wake up in Kullu. Buses board mainly at ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

Fares move with the date, the operator and the season, so treat these as bands rather than fixed prices. HRTC ordinary seats are the cheapest and need no advance booking, while Himsuta and Volvo coaches are worth reserving in the busy September to December window.

How to Reach Kullu from Delhi by Train

There is no direct train to Kullu. The town has no railway station of its own, so the train option always means rail to a nearby railhead and then a bus or cab up into the valley. The three railheads worth knowing are these.

• Joginder Nagar is the nearest, a narrow-gauge station on the scenic Kangra Valley line about 100 to 125 km from Kullu. Charming, but slow, and it is a long onward cab.

• Chandigarh is the most practical broad-gauge railhead, about 235 km from Kullu, with fast trains from Delhi. From here you take an HRTC bus or cab onward, roughly 7 to 8 hours to Kullu.

• Ambala and Kalka are alternative broad-gauge options if you cannot get a Chandigarh seat. Both need an onward road leg of a similar length.

For most people the honest verdict is that the train saves little over a direct bus once you add the onward road leg, and it costs more effort. Use it only if you specifically want the rail experience or cannot find a bus seat.

How to Reach Kullu from Delhi by Air

Flying is the fastest way to reach Kullu when the route is running. The nearest airport is Bhuntar, the Kullu-Manali Airport (KUU), about 10 km south of Kullu, and the hop from Delhi is around 1 hour 20 minutes in the air. The catch is reliability: the runway is short and hemmed by mountains, flights are seasonal and limited, and fog or weather cancels them at short notice.

From Bhuntar it is a short 20 to 30 minute taxi into Kullu, or about an hour on to Manali. Because seats are few and fares swing from about Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 or more, book early and keep a bus or road plan as a backup in case the flight is pulled. 

How to Reach Kullu from Delhi by Road

Driving from Delhi to Kullu covers about 500 to 520 km and takes roughly 11 to 13 hours with breaks, almost all of it on the well-graded Chandigarh-Mandi highway. The usual line is Delhi, Panipat, Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and then up the Beas gorge into Kullu.

Self-drive suits confident hill drivers and groups who want to stop where they like. If you would rather not drive the hill section yourself, a chauffeured cab from Delhi runs from about Rs 7,000 and lets you sleep through the ghat roads. Start before dawn to clear Delhi traffic and reach the hills in daylight.

Best Time to Travel the Delhi to Kullu Route

The best window to make this trip is September to December, and it lines up with the valley at its clearest: post-monsoon roads are stable, the weather is pleasant, and the autumn light through the Beas gorge is at its best. This is also when advance bus booking matters most.

The season to be careful with is the monsoon, roughly July to mid-September, when the Chandigarh to Mandi stretch is prone to landslides and delays. Winter is fine for the drive itself, though cold, and it is the time flight cancellations climb.
