Barot Valley has no entry fee. It is free to enter, open every day of the week, and you do not need a ticket, pass or permit to walk in, drive in, or camp beside the Uhl river. Barot sits about 65 km from Mandi at 1,829 m (6,001 ft), and the only things you ever pay for here are a couple of specific activities, never the valley itself.

Are there any costs at all?
The valley is genuinely free, so plan on paying only for what you choose to do. The two real costs are a trout-fishing licence and, if you head into the forest, Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary. A fishing permit runs roughly Rs 100 to 200 per rod per day from the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department at the Barot trout farm, and most homestays will arrange it for you. Everything else that draws people here costs nothing: the trout breeding centre is open to walk through, and the Shanan hydel project reservoir and the Uhl river are free to sit beside all day.
Barot Valley timings & best time to visit
The valley has no gate, so it is open 24x7; the trout farm and breeding centre keep rough daytime hours of about 6 am to 6 pm (confirm locally). The best months are March to June and September to November, when the roads are clear and the meadows are green. Avoid the July to August monsoon (landslide risk) and deep winter, when snow can block the approach. For a full seasonal and hours breakdown see the Barot Valley timings guide, for the drive from Mandi or Delhi see how to reach Barot Valley, and for what to actually do once you arrive read our places to visit in Barot guide.
Fees and timings on this page are checked by the TravelTriangle Himachal desk against Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department and Mandi district sources. Last updated September 2026. For the full picture of the valley, see our Barot Valley travel guide or plan a trip with a Himachal tour package.

Mandi Travel FAQs
Is Barot Valley free to enter?
Yes. There is no entry fee and no ticket counter. The valley is open all week to everyone, and you can walk, drive or camp there without paying an entry charge.
Do I need a permit to visit Barot Valley?
No. Indian and foreign travellers can enter Barot freely with no inner-line or entry permit. The only permit you might need is a fishing licence, and that is required only if you plan to fish in the Uhl river.
How much is the trout-fishing permit in Barot?
A fishing licence costs about Rs 100 to 200 per rod per day, issued by the HP Fisheries Department at the Barot trout farm. The fishing season runs roughly March to October, and homestays can usually organise the permit and gear for you.
Is there an entry fee for Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary?
A small forest entry or camera fee may apply if you trek into Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary above the valley. Confirm the current charge at the range office before you set out. Barot Valley itself remains free.
What are Barot Valley timings?
The valley itself never closes. The trout farm and breeding centre keep daytime hours of roughly 6 am to 6 pm. See the linked timings guide for a month-by-month view.
What is the best time to visit Barot Valley?
March to June for green meadows and pleasant days, and September to November for clear post-monsoon skies. Skip the July to August monsoon because of landslides, and expect snow-blocked roads in the depth of winter.
