History of Barot Valley

In earlier times, Barot was a part of the Mandi Riyasat and was under the King of Mandi during the British times. Before Independence, Barot was also the path connecting Kullu valley to Kangra valley. The village of Barot, where this valley is situate, came into the limelight in the year 1920, when the Shanan Hydropower Project was proposed in India.

Barot Valley in Mandi is located at a height of 1835 meters on the bank of river Uhl. Mostly famous for its fish farms, it is operated by the Fisheries Department. The village is also the admittance for the Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary which is spread over an area of 278 sq. km. It also boasts of a variety of Fauna and Flora including animals like Monal, Wild Cats, Monkeys, and the Black Bear. The trek routes from Barot leads to Kullu & Kangra Valleys. Uhl River

A natural water body that originates at the Thamsar Glacier, the Uhl river comes from the Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas.
