Tips for Visiting St. Mary's Church, Gulmarg: What to Know Before You Go

Photographing the outside is fine at any time. Inside, ask the caretaker first, switch off the flash and don't take photos during prayers or a service. No official rule is published, so the caretaker decides on the day. Cameras and day bags are fine to carry. Drones need prior permission in Gulmarg.

There is no regular Sunday service, and some listings say the church is shut on Sundays. A weekday between about 10 am and 3 pm gives you the best chance of finding the caretaker with the key. The grounds and the outside can be seen any day in daylight.

Look for a phone number on the board at the gate and call the caretaker, or ask at the tea stalls and pony stands near the golf course, where someone usually knows him. Give him about ten minutes. If nobody comes, the outside and the view over the golf course are still worth the walk.

Cover shoulders and knees and take off hats inside. Gulmarg is at about 2,650 m, so bring a warm layer in every season and a rain jacket from July to September. From December to March you need gloves, a heavy coat, thermals and snow boots with grip, which can be hired in Tangmarg.

Yes. The church stands in snow from December to February and is at its most photogenic then, but the path across the meadow is packed snow and ice. Wear boots that grip, go late morning on a clear day and be back before mid-afternoon, when the meadow freezes and the caretaker leaves.

In some years, yes. Christmas prayers were held in 2017, and the J&K Tourism Department organised a prayer ceremony on 25 December 2024. Services are decided each year, so ask your hotel or the tourism office in Gulmarg on 23 or 24 December. Expect crowds and freezing evenings.
