Tips for Fishing in Gulmarg: Flies, Timing, Safety and Gillies

Small, dark, weighted nymphs in sizes 12 to 16 work on most days, because Gulmarg's brown trout feed mainly below the surface. Patterns with a little yellow or orange are a local favourite, and traditional Kashmir wet flies such as the March Brown and Coachman still catch fish. Early morning, from about 7 am, and the last two hours of daylight. Trout feed most in low light and cool water. Book an authorised gillie with your permit and start on gentle water, such as the Gulmarg Recreational Park or the Lower Ferozepur beat. Practise casting on the grass for 20 minutes before you go near the stream. Then fish a weighted nymph under a small indicator along the slow edges, the easiest method to learn on fast water. Stop by about 1 pm, when the morning feed ends

It is safe in clear, normal flows with grippy boots and a wading staff, but don't wade after rain. The water is ice-cold snowmelt, the boulders are slippery with algae, and the stream rises quickly after showers. Cross only where you can see the bottom, never fish alone, and tell your hotel which beat you are on

Warm layers under a rain shell, quick-dry trousers or waders, and boots with real grip. Add polarised sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen, since UV is strong at about 2,650 m. Mornings are cold even in June. Olive, brown or grey clothing helps you get closer to the fish without spooking them
