Fishing in Gulmarg: Trout Streams, Permit, Season and Rules

Ferozepur Nallah is the mountain stream that flows through the valleys between Chinamarg and Nurpur Pass, and it is Gulmarg's best-known trout water. The cool air, the pine forest and the quiet make a slow morning on the bank one of the better ways to spend a summer day here, away from the Gondola queues.

Best Fishing Spots Near Gulmarg

The department's beat list for Baramulla district names three trout waters around Gulmarg: Ferozepur (Tangmarg), split into Lower, Middle and Upper beats, the Ningle Trout Stream, and the Gulmarg Recreational Park. You book a permit for one named beat, so decide where you are fishing before you pay.

Ferozepur Nallah

Ferozepur Nallah, also called Shinmahinyu, runs through the valleys between Chinamarg and Nurpur Pass, and you can fish for trout here. The nearest stretch is about 5 km from Gulmarg on the Tangmarg side, reached on foot or by pony along the forest road. Incredible India puts it at about 15 km from the main town, which matches the upper water toward the Tosamaidan trek, for which Ferozepur Nallah is the base camp. Tell your driver which beat your permit names and you will end up on the right bank.

The water is cold, quick and clear over pebbles and boulders. Trout sit in the pools behind rocks through the day and feed nearer the surface in the early morning and late afternoon, so those are the hours to be casting. Musk deer are sometimes seen along this stream, which runs through the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary. Don't plan to camp by the stream unless a licensed local operator has cleared it with the Gulmarg Development Authority. Don't wade in after rain. The current is stronger than it looks.

The Confluence of Ferozepur Nallah and River Bahan

Lower down, the Ferozepur Nallah meets the River Bahan. The water widens and slows a little here, which makes casting easier if you are new to fly fishing and have a gillie beside you. It falls within the Ferozepur water, so the same one-day Fisheries permit covers it. Ask the beat staff or your gillie which bank to fish on the day.

Ningle Nallah

Ningle Nallah is the water to pick if you want the bank to yourself. It is a snow-fed stream about 10 km from Gulmarg that flows down from Alpather Lake and the Apharwat range, well away from the Gondola crowds. The department lists it as its own beat, the Ningle Trout Stream, so book that beat if this is the water you want.

The meadow makes a good picnic stop after the morning session. There is nothing for sale by the water, so carry lunch and water from Gulmarg, and skip the camp fire, because open fires on the meadow aren't allowed. Gulmarg Recreational Park and the Fishing Pond (for Families)

The third beat on the department's Gulmarg list is the Gulmarg Recreational Park, so the same one-day permit and fly-only rules apply there. The name places it in Gulmarg itself, which makes it the easiest beat to reach with children or as a first-timer, ideally with a gillie. Older guides also mention a small fishing pond near town. Whether that pond is the park beat and whether it is open this season changes from year to year, so ask your hotel or the Fisheries staff before you go, and assume the permit rules apply unless you are told otherwise.

Fishing Season in Gulmarg: Best Time to Go

The season for fishing in Gulmarg follows the Kashmir trout season, April to September every year. The Directorate of Fisheries can extend or shorten it depending on conditions, and in 2026 the season opened on 2 April. October to March is closed season.

How to Get a Trout Fishing Permit in Gulmarg

Fishing is a permitted activity in the streams of Gulmarg, but not without a licence. Older guides send you to the Directorate of Fisheries office in Srinagar. You don't need to go there now, because the permit is sold online. Here is how it works.

1. Open the angling booking on the J&K Department of Fisheries website a few days before your trip, since mobile data by the streams is patchy.

2. Choose the beat. Pick a Ferozepur (Tangmarg) beat, the Ningle Trout Stream or the Gulmarg Recreational Park.

3. Choose the date. Each permit is valid for one day only. In 2026 Indian anglers could book only Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and foreign anglers any day.

4. Pay the fee online. Rs 1,500 a day for Indian anglers, Rs 3,500 a day for foreign anglers.

5. Ask for a gillie if you want one. The department provides experienced gillies (shikaris) on request.

6. Carry the permit and a photo ID on the bank, printed or on your phone. Fisheries staff can ask to see it.

The permit can't be sub-let, shared or transferred, so every angler in your group needs their own. Some websites still quote Rs 200 to 500, or Rs 1,000 a day. Those are old figures. Fishing Rules in Gulmarg

The rules for fishing in Gulmarg come from the J&K Department of Fisheries. They are short, and they are enforced on the bank.

• No fishing without a valid one-day licence.

• Only artificial fly fishing is allowed. All natural baits, dead or alive, are banned. Anything other than a fly, nets included, is out.

• One rod per angler.

• A bag limit of 6 fish a day. You don't have to keep them. Release is welcome.

• Keep the permit with you and show it to department officials when asked.

• Only authorised gillies can guide anglers. Turn down anyone who offers to take you fishing without a permit.

Alpather Lake and the other glacial lakes above Gulmarg aren't on the beat list, so the streams are where you fish. If you plan to release fish, use barbless hooks, wet your hands before you touch a trout and keep it in the water while you unhook it. Carry out every bit of line and litter, because both streams run through grazing meadows that feed villages downstream.

Cost of Fishing in Gulmarg

The permit is the only fixed cost of fishing in Gulmarg. Everything else depends on how you get to the water and whether you bring your own kit.

Pay pony handlers and taxi drivers in cash and in small notes. Card and UPI acceptance is patchy, and there is no ATM once you leave Gulmarg town.

How to Reach the Fishing Spots

Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar by road through Tangmarg, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours. The road and flight options are in how to reach Gulmarg and Srinagar to Gulmarg. Once you are in town, outside cabs from Srinagar usually won't run local sightseeing, so plan on a union taxi or a pony.

• Ferozepur Nallah. About 5 km on the Tangmarg side, by pony or on foot along the forest road, or by taxi down the Tangmarg road and then a short walk to the bank.

• The Bahan confluence. Lower down the same water. Your gillie will know the way in from the road.

• Ningle Nallah. About 10 km on the Lienmarg side. Union taxi most of the way, then a short walk. A pony takes longer on a stony track.

Leave Gulmarg by 7 am to be casting for the morning feed. In summer, cloud tends to build after lunch and showers follow, so plan to be off the bank by early afternoon unless you are staying for the evening rise with a guide.

Fishing Gear and What to Carry

Good tackle is hard to hire, so for fishing in Gulmarg bring your own or arrange it in Srinagar before you drive up. A light outfit suits these streams.

• A fly rod of 8.5 to 9 ft for a #4 to #6 line, with a floating line.

• Small nymphs and dry flies in dark, drab colours, plus a few streamers for high water.

• Polarised sunglasses, so you can see into the pools.

• Wading boots or trekking shoes with grip. The rocks are slippery.

• A warm layer and a rain shell, even in June. The water is snowmelt and the banks are shaded.

• Sunscreen and a cap. UV is strong at about 2,650 m.

• Your permit, a photo ID, cash, water and lunch.

Fishing With a Guide (Gillie)

A gillie earns the fee on fast Himalayan water. A good one knows where the trout hold on your beat, which flies are working that week and where the banks are safe. The department supplies experienced gillies on request when you book, and only authorised ones are allowed on the water.

How Trout Came to Gulmarg

Trout aren't native to Kashmir. According to the FAO's history of Himalayan coldwater fisheries, F.J. Mitchell imported brown trout eggs from Scotland in 1899 and 1900, and they hatched at a small hatchery at Harwan near Srinagar. Rainbow trout came much later and are mostly raised in farms such as Kokernag.

Cold, oxygen-rich snowmelt suited them. The brown trout settled in completely, and the department now says trout is present in all the streams and nallahs of the valley. Anglers from abroad have come for it every summer since.

Tips for Fishing in Gulmarg

• Book the permit before you leave Srinagar. Signal by the streams comes and goes.

• If you are Indian, check the booking days. In 2026 local anglers could fish only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

• Go in June or September for clear water and mild days.

• Hire a department gillie for your first day. Casting on fast water is harder than it looks.

• Families can start on the Gulmarg Recreational Park beat, then watch a fly-fishing session on the stream.

• Be off the bank before dark. The forest tracks have no lighting.

• Keep children well back from the water. It is ice-cold snowmelt and faster than it looks.
