Bhawan to Bhairo ropeway (Shrine Board)

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board runs an aerial ropeway straight from the Bhawan up to the Bhairo temple, and for most pilgrims it is the easy way to finish the yatra. It operates 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, carries you across in about three minutes, and costs Rs 100 per person for the round trip (one ticket covers the ride up and back). Buy tickets at the ropeway counter at the Bhawan or through the Shrine Board's online portal. The cabins move fast, close to 800 passengers an hour, but the queue still builds through the middle of the day, so ride early or late if you can. It shuts during bad weather and maintenance. Fares are set by the Shrine Board and change from time to time, so treat Rs 100 as the current guide rate and confirm at the counter.

How to reach Bhairo Baba temple from the Bhawan

Bhairo Baba sits about 2 km above the Bhawan, a steady uphill of roughly one to one-and-a-half hours on foot. You have three ways up:

• Ropeway. The quickest, about 3 minutes, 9 AM to 5 PM, Rs 100 round trip. Best if your legs are tired after the cave climb or you are short on daylight.

• On foot. A paved but steep path, around 2 km, one to one-and-a-half hours up and about an hour down. Carry water; there are stalls along the way.

• You do not have to walk back down to the Bhawan afterwards: a separate track runs down from Bhairo via Sanjichhat and rejoins the main route towards Katra.

• Pony or palki. Available from near the Bhawan for those who cannot walk the climb; rates are fixed by the Shrine Board, so check the posted rate list and agree the fare before you start.

Why Bhairo darshan completes the Vaishno Devi yatra

Ask any regular pilgrim and they will tell you the same thing: the yatra is not finished at the Holy Cave, it is finished at Bhairo Baba. The legend goes that after Mata Vaishno Devi ended Bhairon Nath here, she granted that no darshan of the Goddess would count as complete until the devotee also visited his shrine above the Bhawan. The Shrine Board does not stop anyone from leaving without it, but tradition is strong, and this is why almost everyone makes the extra climb. It is a short, meaningful last leg, and the view back over the Trikuta hills is worth the effort.
