Yes. Every angler needs a one-day permit from the J&K Department of Fisheries for a named beat and date, and it is issued only online through angling.jkfisheries.co.in or the link on jkfisheries.in. Keep it on you, because fisheries officials can ask to see it at any time on the water. There is no walk-in counter that issues permits in 2026.

Open angling.jkfisheries.co.in when the season notice is out (in 2026 booking opened on 1 April), choose your stream, beat and date, pay online and save the permit to your phone or print it. Beats go first come, first served. In 2026, foreign anglers could book any day and local anglers on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Ignore anyone who offers to arrange a permit for you.

No bait, ever. The Fisheries Department bans all natural bait, dead or alive, and allows only artificial-fly fishing on its trout beats. Older J&K Tourism notes say spinning was allowed on the big rivers and on the high-altitude lakes, but the department's current rules list flies only. Carry flies, and ask the department when you book if you plan to fish a high lake.

You can keep up to six trout per angler per day. Gut your fish before the drive back and keep them cool. Ask your houseboat or hotel the night before whether their kitchen will cook them. On beats marked for conservation, check with your ghillie whether you should release everything, and handle released fish with wet hands, keeping them in the water.

August and September are the best all-round months, with lower, clearer rivers and good evening dry-fly fishing. April and May fish well on the lower beats, which the department itself recommends in those months because of the strong current. From late May to early July the Sindh and Lidder carry snowmelt, so spring-fed water such as Kokernag is the better choice.

Tackle shops in Srinagar hire and sell rods, reels, flies, nets and baskets. The fishing counter at the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar can also advise on equipment and beats. Hired rods are usually light 2 to 3 m rods with a small reel. Bring your own tippet and wading boots, because hire kits rarely include good ones.
