How to reach Bolgatty Palace from Ernakulam at a glance

Bolgatty is closer to the middle of Kochi than most people expect. Every distance below is measured to the resort gate on the island. Cabs and autos run to all of these points, and app cabs (Ola, Uber) work fine.

By Kochi Water Metro or ferry (the easy way onto the island)

The simplest way to reach Bolgatty is the Kochi Water Metro, India's first water metro service. Board at the High Court terminal on Marine Drive and stay on the High Court to Mulavukadu line. Bolgatty is the second stop, so you are off the boat within about 10 to 15 minutes, a short walk from the palace grounds. The ferries are air-conditioned and electric, the fare is a few rupees, and you glide past Marine Drive, the Goshree Bridge and the container-terminal backwaters instead of sitting in road traffic. Confirm the current first and last boat times at the terminal, since the schedule changes with the season.

There are older options too. Passenger ferries run to Bolgatty from Ernakulam and Fort Kochi through the day, roughly 6 am to 9 pm, for a nominal fare of around four rupees a person. If you are booked into the resort, Bolgatty Palace also runs a free ferry for its guests, so call the front desk to line up the crossing before you arrive.

By road over the Goshree Bridge

You do not need a boat to reach Bolgatty. The island is joined to mainland Ernakulam by the Goshree bridges, so a cab or auto can drive you straight to the gate. From Marine Drive or the High Court Jetty, head toward Vypin and Mulavukadu, cross the Goshree Bridge, then turn onto Bolgatty Island. It is about a 10-minute drive from Marine Drive once you are moving. Self-drive is fine too, and there is parking at the resort. This road link is why the old idea that Bolgatty is boat-only no longer holds: you can arrive by car or by water, whichever suits you.

Nearest railway station and Kochi Metro station

The nearest main railway station is Ernakulam Junction, also called Ernakulam South, about 6 km away. Ernakulam Town (Ernakulam North) is a touch closer at around 5 km and handles some long-distance trains. Both have prepaid autos and taxis at the exit, and the ride over the Goshree Bridge takes 20 to 25 minutes. The nearest Kochi Metro (rail) station is MG Road, roughly 4 km away. From Cochin International Airport (COK)

Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is about 30 km from Bolgatty and takes 45 to 60 minutes by cab, mostly along NH66, depending on traffic through Edappally. Prepaid and app cabs are available at the arrivals hall, and the metered fare usually lands somewhere around Rs 900 to Rs 1,200. If you are travelling light and would rather avoid the road, take a cab to Marine Drive and switch to the Water Metro for the final leg onto the island.

Getting around, last-mile and parking

Bolgatty Island is small and flat, so once you are there most of it is walkable. Autos and cabs wait near the resort gate for trips back to the mainland. If you are visiting during peak morning or evening traffic, the Water Metro is genuinely the fastest way in and out, since it skips the Goshree bottleneck entirely. Driving in yourself is easy and there is parking at the property.
