Thusharagiri Waterfall Timings
Thusharagiri Waterfall is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week. Arriving by mid-morning gives you the best light on the water and enough time to finish the short trek before the afternoon crowds. During heavy monsoon spells the forest staff sometimes hold visitors back from the upper rocks when the flow turns dangerous, so the earlier you get there, the more of the falls you will actually see.
If you plan to walk the forest trek to the upper falls, start early: Kerala Tourism's ecotourism listing gives the trek visiting window as 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
For a fuller breakdown of opening hours, closing time and the best slot to visit, see our Thusharagiri Waterfall timings page.
What You Will See: Erattumukku, Mazhavil Chattom and Thenpara Falls
Thusharagiri is not a single sheet of water but a cluster of falls fed by the Chalippuzha river as it comes off the Western Ghats. The name translates to 'sprays of snow', for the fine white mist that rises where the water hits the rock. Most of that view is what your ticket buys.
Two cascades pull in the crowds. Erattumukku, the twin-mouthed fall reached by a short forest trek from the entry point, is the one most visitors photograph and the safest spot for a dip. Further along the trail, Mazhavil Chattom (the rainbow fall) and Thumpithullum Para reward anyone willing to walk deeper into the reserve, and Thenpara lies further upstream on a longer trek. The whole stretch runs through spice plantations and evergreen forest, so the walk in is part of the draw.
Can You Swim and Trek at Thusharagiri?
Yes, you can bathe in the shallow natural pools at the lower level, and for many families that is the main reason to come. The rocks are slick and the current strengthens fast after rain, so stay inside the marked shallow areas and keep out of the deeper pools during and just after the monsoon. Every year the falls see accidents when visitors climb onto wet upper rocks, so read the warning boards and watch children closely.
Beyond a swim, the trail is popular for trekking, and the boulders near the second tier draw rock climbers and rappelling groups. Photographers get their best frames in the soft light of early morning, when the mist is thickest and the crowd is thin. The surrounding forest is a rewarding patch for birdwatching too.
Along the trail, look out for Thanni Muthassi, a centuries-old hollow Thanni tree that is wide enough inside for a few people to step into.
Best Time to Visit Thusharagiri Waterfall
September to January is the sweet spot. The monsoon from June to August gives the falls their heaviest flow, but the rocks are treacherous and access is sometimes restricted. By September the water is still full, the forest is at its greenest, and the trail is far safer underfoot. From February the flow starts to thin, and by peak summer some of the upper tiers slow to a trickle. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends.
If you visit in late July or early August, you may catch the Malabar River Festival, the international white-water kayaking championship held on the Chalippuzha and Iruvanjippuzha rivers around Kodencheri and Pulikkayam, close to Thusharagiri. Dates and venues change each year, so check the current edition before you plan around it.
How to Reach Thusharagiri from Kozhikode and Calicut
By road
Thusharagiri is about 50 km east of Kozhikode, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive via Thiruvambadi and Kodencheri. The last stretch is a narrow plantation road, so a car or two-wheeler is easier than a large bus. State buses run to Kodencheri, from where a local auto or jeep covers the final few kilometres to the entry point.
By train
The nearest railway station is Kozhikode (Calicut), on the main coastal line with good connections across Kerala and to the rest of India. From the station it is a road transfer of about an hour and a half to the falls.
By air
Calicut International Airport (CCJ) at Karipur is the closest airport, roughly 55 km away, with taxis and app cabs available for the run out to Kodencheri.
How We Verify These Fees
This page is maintained by the TravelTriangle Kerala desk, drawing on trips our travellers have taken across the Kozhikode region. We cross-check attraction fees and timings against local operators and the posted rates at the entry counter before publishing, because forest entry charges in Kerala change without much notice and are rarely updated online in step.

Kozhikode Travel FAQs
What is the entry fee for Thusharagiri Waterfall?
The entry fee is Rs 30 for Indian adults and Rs 15 for children and students. You buy the ticket at the counter near the entry point, and it covers access to the falls trail. A small separate charge applies for parking. Since forest entry rates are revised occasionally and not always posted online, reconfirm at the counter if you are on a tight budget.
What are the timings of Thusharagiri Waterfall?
Thusharagiri Waterfall is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm every day of the week. Mornings give the best light and the fewest people. In heavy monsoon the staff may hold visitors back from the upper rocks when the flow is dangerous, so an early start gives you the fullest view.
Is there a parking fee at Thusharagiri Waterfall?
Yes, there is a small parking charge for cars and two-wheelers at the entrance, paid on arrival. Keep some cash handy, as the parking and ticket counters do not always have a working card machine.
Can you swim at Thusharagiri Waterfall?
You can take a dip in the shallow natural pools at the lower level, and it is one of the main draws for families. The rocks are slippery and the current is strong after rain, so stay in the marked shallow areas and avoid the deeper pools during and just after the monsoon. Watch children closely and follow the warning boards.
Which river forms Thusharagiri Waterfall?
Thusharagiri is formed by the Chalippuzha river as it drops through the Western Ghats. The Chalippuzha feeds the Iruvanjippuzha near Thiruvambady, which in turn joins the Chaliyar, so the falls are part of the Chaliyar river system. The falls come in several tiers, of which Erattumukku, the twin-mouthed cascade, is the one most visitors reach.
What is the best time to visit Thusharagiri Waterfall?
September to January is the best window. The falls run full after the monsoon while the trail is safe underfoot and the forest is green. The monsoon months of June to August bring the heaviest flow but slippery rocks and occasional access limits. By peak summer the upper tiers slow down.
How do you reach Thusharagiri Waterfall from Kozhikode?
Thusharagiri is about 50 km east of Kozhikode, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive via Thiruvambadi and Kodencheri. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode and the nearest airport is Calicut International (CCJ), about 55 km away. Buses run to Kodencheri, from where a local auto or jeep covers the last stretch.
Do you need to book tickets online for Thusharagiri Waterfall?
Advance booking is not usually needed, as tickets are sold at the counter near the entry point on arrival. The Kerala Forest Department also runs an online ecotourism booking portal, so check it for trek slots during peak season. Visitors often report that the counter prefers UPI or GPay, so keep a UPI app ready along with some small change.
