How To Reach Matheran

Matheran is a beautiful hill station located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India

How To Reach Matheran

Situated in the lap of the beautiful Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, Matheran is an inviting little hill station 100 kilometres from bustling Mumbai.

Known as the “overhead forest,” Matheran proudly holds the title of the smallest hill station in India. Yet, it attracts many visitors seeking a refreshing escape surrounded by stunning views and peaceful surroundings. The nearest railway station is Neral, conveniently located on the Mumbai-Pune line, merely 21 km from Matheran. From Neral, you can hop on the charming Matheran Hill railway, one of India's delightful six mountain railways. If you're flying in, Pune has the nearest airport, where you’ll find taxis ready to take you on your journey. Alternatively, you can catch a cab or bus from nearby towns and get close to Matheran (just 3 km away) before embarking on a delightful horse ride, leisurely walk, or even a man-pulled rickshaw to reach the hill station. Remember, Matheran is a pollution-free zone, so we enjoy these eco-friendly transportation options!

Matheran does not have an airport. But the nearest airport to Matheran is Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, which is approximately 44 kilometres away. Mumbai International Airport is connected to all the major cities across the country. Once reached, one can book a cab or take a bus to Matheran. Depending on the traffic, it will take hardly 2 hours to reach Matheran.

The Mumbai-Pune Highway beautifully connects Matheran with the bustling cities of Mumbai, Pune, and Panvel. You’ll find regular state transport buses from these cities going to Neral, your gateway to Matheran. Just a heads up, though: buses can only take you to Neral! From there, you have some charming options for your onward journey, whether it's the delightful toy trains or a scenic car drive to Dasturi Naka.

Matheran features a charming railway station, conveniently linked to Neral Junction by a delightful toy train and to Karjat Junction by a local train. You'll find it much easier to travel from Neral, just 8 km away, rather than from Karjat, which is 19 km distant. The beautiful journey will surely take your breath away.
