How to Reach Maafushi Island
Maafushi Island is amongst the biggest and most popular islands in the Maldives. Situated around 27 kms away from the Male in Kaafu Atoll, this island covers an area of approximately 1270 x 265 m and is in elongated form. This place is just perfect to have lots of fun activities and taste some exotic delicacies. It is quite easy to get to this island. The journey starts by taking a flight to the Male International Airport, which is also known as Velana International Airport.
From the airport, there are two options available to reach Maafushi island: by Speedboat or by Ferry Service. Speedboat is usually preferred by the tourist as it takes lesser time and is more readily available. However, travel via ferry is way cheaper.
How to reach Maafushi Island via Speedboat?
From the Male International Airport, one can easily take a direct speedboat to the Maafushi Island. It is always recommended to book a speedboat prior to avoid any sort of inconvenience. It is can be easily done by dropping a mail to the service provider. Usually, a good number of rides are available every day from morning to evening. The availability of seats, timings and fare can be easily checked on their respective websites. The journey from Male to Maafushi by speedboat typically takes around 45 to 50 minutes.
How to reach Maafushi Island via Ferry?
For those on a budget holiday, ferry is undoubtedly a better option. From the Male International airport, one needs to take a ferry or a speedboat to Male from Maafushi where the ferry terminal is located. The ferry ride to Male island will cost around one dollar. It takes 10 minutes to reach the terminal. However, traveling via speedboat demands a double amount ($2 approx.) but it takes just 4 minutes to reach the next location.
After reaching Male island, one can take a taxi to Jetty 1 or the ‘Maafushi Ferry’. This taxi ride costs nearly $2 and takes another 10 minutes to reach the ferry point. From the jetty, one can easily take a ferry service to Maafushi island that cost $3 per person and takes a traveling time of nearly 90 minutes. Since, ferry can’t be booked online, one need to reach here, an hour prior, to purchase the tickets. Please note that the ferry is not available on Fridays and no food and water will be accessible on the board.
