Over four days you settle into Manali, spend a full day among the snow and adventure at Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel, and take in the temples and castle of the Kullu valley before heading home. The price shown is land-only, so your hotel, breakfast and dinner, every sightseeing drive and all ground transfers in Manali are covered. You book the Chennai air leg separately, or we fold it into a single flight-inclusive quote.

How to reach Manali from Chennai by flight
There is no direct flight from Chennai to Manali, so every Chennai to Manali trip flies in two legs. You fly from Chennai (MAA) to a northern hub, then drive into the mountains. Three routings work, from cheapest air to shortest drive.
• Via Delhi (most flights, usually the cheapest air): Fly Chennai to Delhi in about 2 hours 45 minutes, then drive Delhi to Manali, roughly 540 km and 12 to 14 hours, most often as an overnight Volvo coach or a private cab.
• Via Chandigarh (shorter road leg): Fly Chennai to Chandigarh (usually one stop via Delhi), then drive Chandigarh to Manali, about 310 km and 8 to 9 hours.
• Via Kullu-Manali / Bhuntar airport (shortest drive, priciest air): Fly Chennai to Bhuntar (KUU) with a Delhi layover, then a short 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hour drive to Manali.
Most Chennai travellers take the Delhi route and the overnight coach; it saves a hotel night and gets you into Manali in time for the Day 1 sightseeing. For a full breakdown of trains, buses and drive times, see our guide on how to reach Manali.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Manali and local sightseeing
After you land at Delhi or Chandigarh and finish the road transfer into the Kullu valley (or fly straight in to Bhuntar), you check in to your Manali hotel and freshen up. The rest of the day is an easy local round so you acclimatise before the higher-altitude day that follows. You visit the centuries-old Hadimba Devi Temple set in a deodar grove, the Vashisht village temples and the natural Vashisht hot water springs, and Van Vihar beside the Beas river. Later there is free time to walk The Mall Road and browse the Tibetan Monastery and IBEX Market for shawls, caps and curios. Dinner and an overnight stay in Manali are included.
Day 2: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu (Rohtang subject to permit)
A full day up in the snow. Depending on the season and permits, you either head to Solang Valley for the ropeway, paragliding, zorbing and skiing, or cross the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel to Sissu and the Lahaul valley, the popular all-weather choice when Rohtang Pass is shut. Rohtang Pass itself opens roughly May to November and needs a permit (see the permit note below); it closes through the winter snow. Adventure activities such as skiing, snow-scooter rides and horse riding are payable on the spot. Dinner and overnight stay in Manali.
Day 3: Naggar and the Kullu valley
Drive down to Naggar for the 500-year-old Naggar Castle, the nearby Nicholas Roerich art gallery, and the Gauri Shankar and Jagatsukh temples, with a stop at a shawl factory. Prefer Kullu and the Manikaran Sahib hot springs and gurudwara instead? This day is fully customisable on request. Dinner and overnight stay in Manali.
Day 4: Departure
After breakfast and hotel checkout, a private cab drops you at your Volvo coach point or onward transfer for the return road leg to Delhi or Chandigarh and your flight back to Chennai. If your schedule allows, ask us to build in a last stop at the Manu Temple before you leave.
Price: land-only vs flight-inclusive
This 3 nights 4 days Manali package starts at Rs 5,279 and goes up to Rs 5,801 per person on twin sharing, and it is priced land-only. Land-only means everything on the ground in Manali is included: your hotel, breakfast and dinner, all sightseeing, local and intercity transfers, and taxes. It does not include your Chennai flight.
For a like-for-like comparison with the flight-inclusive listings you see elsewhere (rival packages advertise around Rs 11,000 to Rs 21,000 per person by flight), add the Chennai air leg. Return Chennai to Delhi or Chandigarh fares typically run about Rs 9,000 to Rs 16,000 per person depending on the season and how early you book. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is the single biggest saving on the flight. Tell us your dates and we will quote the flight-inclusive total, so the Rs 5,279 land-only figure never reads as a surprise at checkout.
Best time to visit and the Rohtang permit
Best time to visit
October to February is peak season for Chennai travellers who want snow, and December to February is the coldest stretch with the best chance of fresh snowfall around Solang and the Atal Tunnel. March to June is green and pleasant and suits families who would rather skip the deep cold. July to September is the monsoon, when landslides can disrupt the mountain roads, so build in buffer time if you travel then.
Rohtang Pass and permits
Rohtang Pass is open roughly May to November, closes in winter, and needs an online permit that is capped each day; it is also shut on Tuesdays for maintenance. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu and Solang Valley need no such permit, which is why the itinerary leans on them when Rohtang is closed. Our team arranges the Rohtang permit where it is required and where daily slots are available.

Himachal Travel FAQs
How do I reach Manali from Chennai by flight?
There is no direct flight from Chennai to Manali. You fly from Chennai to Delhi or Chandigarh (Chennai to Delhi is about 2 hours 45 minutes) and then drive in, roughly 12 to 14 hours from Delhi or 8 to 9 hours from Chandigarh. The shortest drive is to fly to Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar) airport via a Delhi layover, then a 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hour road transfer to Manali.
Are there direct flights from Chennai to Manali?
No. Manali has no airport of its own, and the nearest one, Kullu-Manali (Bhuntar), sits about 50 km away and has no direct Chennai flight. Every route connects through Delhi, or occasionally Chandigarh, before the road leg into the mountains.
Is airfare included in this package?
No. This is a land-only package from Rs 5,279 per person that covers your Manali hotel, breakfast and dinner, all sightseeing and ground transfers. The Chennai flight is booked separately, or we can add it to your quote so you see one flight-inclusive total.
Do I need a Rohtang Pass permit?
Yes, if you go up to Rohtang Pass. It is open roughly May to November, closes on Tuesdays for maintenance, and needs an online permit that is capped daily. The Atal Tunnel, Sissu and Solang Valley need no permit, and our team arranges the Rohtang permit for you where it is required and slots are open.
What is the best time for a Chennai to Manali trip?
October to February is best for snow, with December to February the coldest and snowiest. March to June is pleasant and green and easier for families. Avoid July to September if you can, as monsoon landslides can disrupt the mountain roads.
What should Chennai travellers pack for Manali?
From November to February pack heavy woollens, thermals, gloves, a warm cap and waterproof shoes, as Chennai wardrobes rarely carry winter kit. Add sunscreen and lip balm for the high-altitude sun. From March to June, light layers and a jacket for the evenings are enough.
Is the Atal Tunnel and Sissu covered, and do I need a permit?
Yes, the Day 2 plan can include the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel across to Sissu in the Lahaul valley. It needs no permit and is the go-to snow spot when Rohtang Pass is shut, which makes it a reliable winter alternative for Chennai travellers.
How many days are enough for Manali from Chennai?
Because two of your days involve air plus a long road transfer, a 3 nights 4 days on-ground plan is the practical minimum for a satisfying trip. Add a night if you want to include Kullu and Manikaran or simply travel at a slower pace.
