Day-Wise 4 Day Manali Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Manali, Hadimba Temple and local sightseeing

On arrival in Manali you are picked up and driven to your hotel to check in and freshen up. Once the town wakes up in the afternoon you head out for a half-day city tour. First is the Hadimba Devi Temple, a pagoda-style wooden shrine set in the Van Vihar cedar forest at Dhungri, calmest in the late afternoon. From there you visit Vashisht village for its natural hot-water springs and old stone temple, then the Tibetan monastery near Mall Road. The evening is yours for a walk along Mall Road and the IBEX Market, the two shopping streets where the Manali woollens, caps and handicrafts are sold. Dinner and the night are at your hotel.

Day 2: Solang Valley and Rohtang snow point, or the Atal Tunnel to Sissu

After breakfast you drive up toward the Rohtang Pass, at 3,978 m the high mountain pass that connects Manali to the Lahaul and Spiti district, through the pretty Gulaba and Marhi stretch. Vehicle access to Rohtang is capped at 1,200 vehicles a day and needs a permit, and the pass closes on Tuesdays and through the deep-winter months. On any date Rohtang is shut, or if you want the modern route, the day runs instead through the Atal Tunnel, at just over 9 km one of the longest high-altitude road tunnels in the world, which drops you into the Lahaul valley at Sissu with its waterfall and open river flats about 90 minutes from Manali. Either way the halfway point of the day is Solang Valley, the activity slope below Rohtang, where you can try the snow rides, skiing or a ropeway ride at your own cost. You return to Manali for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Naggar Castle, the Kullu shawl valley and Jagatsukh

After breakfast you drive down the valley toward Kullu and Naggar for a slower, greener day than the snow line. The main stop is Naggar Castle, a centuries-old stone-and-timber fort that was once a royal seat and now holds a small gallery and a temple courtyard. Around it you visit the Gauri Shankar temple, the Roerich art gallery, and the old Shiva shrine at Jagatsukh, one of the oldest temples in the valley. On the drive you stop at a Kullu shawl and handloom workshop, a good place to watch the weaving and buy a genuine Kullu shawl rather than a machine-made copy, and there is an option to add river rafting on the Beas near Kullu for anyone who wants it. You are back in Manali by evening for dinner and your last night in the hills.

Day 4: Departure

After breakfast you check out of the hotel. If your onward travel allows it, the morning is free for a last walk on Mall Road to pick up any woollens, wood carving or handicrafts you had your eye on. You are then transferred to the Volvo or bus station for your journey home, with a few days of Manali behind you. Things To Do At Solang Valley

• Paragliding. Tandem flights with an instructor run from the ridge above Solang in the clear-weather months. This is the signature Solang activity.

• Ropeway and cable car. The cable car up to the higher slope, worth it for the views even if you skip the other rides.

• Zorbing. Rolling down the meadow inside a clear plastic sphere, a favourite with families and kids.
