Kullu Manali Family Package From Chennai (5D/4N): Overview
Booked as a private, fully customisable package. Change any day, add or drop a night, and travel on the dates that suit school holidays. Every trip is handled by a verified local Manali operator, transfers are on a private basis (not a shared coach), and your itinerary and hotel are confirmed before you pay in full. Free cancellation window applies.
A Kullu Manali family trip from Chennai comes down to one honest question. How do you cross about 2,700 km with kids and grandparents without losing two days to the road? For most Chennai families the answer is to fly, and this 5 days and 4 nights package is built around exactly that. You fly up to North India, transfer into the mountains by private cab, and then settle into four unhurried nights in Manali so nobody spends the holiday recovering from the journey. The land package starts at Rs 16,999 per person on twin sharing, with airfare booked on top (the flight section below explains why).
Manali works for a mixed-age family because the sights sit close together. The snow points at Solang Valley and Rohtang, the wooden Hadimba Devi temple in its cedar forest, the sulphur hot springs at Vashisht where you can actually bathe, and the drive through the Atal Tunnel are all a short ride from the town centre. Younger children get their first snow. Grandparents get temples, an easy Mall Road stroll, and warm rooms. Teenagers get a Beas river raft, a paragliding descent at Solang, or a yak ride on the meadow. The package keeps the base in one hotel for all four nights, so there is no daily packing and re-packing with a tired toddler.
This is the family-scoped, by-flight version of our Chennai to Himachal range. If you want a broader set of Himachal options from your city, see our Chennai to Himachal tour packages.

How to Reach Kullu Manali From Chennai
There is no direct flight from Chennai to Kullu Manali. The nearest airport to the valley is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali airport, code KUU), about 50 km and a 90-minute drive from Manali, but it only takes small aircraft on limited, weather-dependent schedules. So every Chennai family reaches Manali in two legs: a main flight to Delhi or Chandigarh, then the mountains by road or a short hop. Here is how the routes compare.
| Route | How | Approx time (after landing) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chennai to Chandigarh, then road | Fly Chennai to Chandigarh (IXC), then private cab to Manali (about 270 km) | 8 to 9 hours by road | The quickest all-round option; smoothest drive |
| Chennai to Delhi, then road | Fly Chennai to Delhi (DEL), then private cab to Manali (about 540 km) | 12 to 14 hours, usually an overnight or early start | Most flight choices and lowest airfares |
| Chennai to Delhi, then Bhuntar | Fly to Delhi, then a connecting flight to Bhuntar (KUU), then 90-minute cab | About 2 hours flying + the drive | Elders or very young kids who cannot manage a long drive |
Prefer the train? Families on a tighter budget take the Chennai to Delhi rail route (the Rajdhani takes roughly 28 hours) or Chennai to Chandigarh, then continue by road. It saves on airfare but adds a full day each way, which is a lot with small children. Most families we plan for choose to fly up and keep the train for the return only if time allows. We arrange the cab and hotel either way; you can book flights yourself or ask us to quote them at live fares.
5-Day Family Itinerary
Day 1: Chennai to Manali
Fly out of Chennai in the morning to Delhi or Chandigarh. From Chandigarh our driver meets you and takes the Kiratpur to Bilaspur to Mandi road up to Manali; from Delhi it is a longer haul, so many families break it with an overnight or take the connecting flight to Bhuntar. Reach your Manali hotel, check in, and rest. If you land with daylight to spare, a slow walk along Mall Road and an early dinner is enough for the first evening. Kids sleep off the travel; the mountains start tomorrow.
Day 2: Manali sightseeing
After breakfast, an easy half-day around Manali. Start at the Hadimba Devi temple, a 16th-century wooden shrine set among tall deodar cedars where children can feed the rabbits and pose with the angora. Walk across to Old Manali, then on to Vashisht village for its stone temple and the open-air sulphur hot springs, where a warm soak is a hit with tired grandparents. The afternoon is free for the Mall Road, the Tibetan monastery, and shawl and cap shopping. Nothing here is rushed, which is the point on a family trip.
Day 3: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and the snow
The big day. Drive up to Solang Valley for the snow and the meadow games: a ropeway ride, zorbing, a gentle yak ride, and for teenagers a short paragliding descent (all on the spot, weather permitting). From Solang, continue through the Atal Tunnel, the 9 km all-weather tunnel that opened in 2020, to reach the Sissu side of the Lahaul valley for photos of the river and waterfalls. In the higher season (roughly May to October) you can instead drive up to Rohtang Pass for deeper snow, subject to the daily vehicle permit and quota set by the authorities. Back at the hotel by evening.
Day 4: Naggar, Kullu and the Beas
Head south along the Beas towards Naggar. Visit the 500-year-old Naggar Castle with its valley views and the Roerich art gallery, and stop at the village temples on the way. On the Kullu stretch you can add a Beas river rafting run at Pirdi (grade II to III, life-jacketed, and fine for older kids), and browse the Kullu shawl workshops. Return to Manali for your last mountain dinner.
Day 5: Departure
After a relaxed breakfast, check out and transfer back to your departure airport (Chandigarh, Delhi or Bhuntar, depending on your booked flight) for the journey home to Chennai. If your flight is late, we can add a short stop on the way down; just tell us when you customise the plan.
Package Cost and What Is Included
The land package is priced from Rs 16,999 per person on twin sharing (marked down from Rs 18,279), and it covers everything on the ground in Manali: your 3-star hotel for four nights, daily breakfast and dinner, all sightseeing and transfers by private cab, and the Solang and Rohtang day trips. What it does not cover is airfare. Flights from Chennai are quoted and booked separately, because fares swing with the season and the date, and many families already hold miles or prefer their own carrier. As a rough guide, a 5-day Manali trip on comfortable 3-star stay runs about Rs 17,000 to Rs 20,000 per person on the ground before flights, which is where this package sits. Final cost depends on your hotel category, travel dates, and group size; send your dates for a live quote.
Included: 4 nights hotel accommodation in Manali (3-star); daily buffet breakfast and dinner at the hotel; day excursion to Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass; all intercity and local transfers by private cab; all applicable taxes on the land package.
Not included: airfare (Chennai to Delhi / Chandigarh / Bhuntar and back); lunch, snacks and personal expenses; Rohtang Pass permit and any activity charges at Solang; travel insurance premium; early check-in / late check-out charges and anything not listed under Included.
Cancellation and refunds: free cancellation applies up to a set number of days before departure, with a tiered refund closer to the travel date.
Best Time to Visit and Family Tips
For a South-Indian family chasing snow, December to February is the window: Manali and Solang are white, though Rohtang is usually closed and the Atal Tunnel becomes the way across. For the higher passes and open Rohtang, come May to early July or September to October, when the roads are clear and the days are mild. July and August bring the monsoon and the odd landslide delay, so keep a buffer day if you travel then.
For the kids and elders: carry layers, not just heavy coats. Mornings are cold and afternoons can be sunny, so kids do best in zip-up fleeces they can shed.
Pace the snow day: the drive to Rohtang and back is long; families with very young children or elderly parents often skip it and enjoy Solang and the Atal Tunnel run instead, which is gentler and just as scenic.
South-Indian and vegetarian food is easy to find on Mall Road, and idli, dosa and simple veg thalis are widely available in Manali. A Tamil-speaking coordinator and South-Indian meal arrangements can be organised on request.
Hotels
You stay all four nights in a comfortable 3-star property in Manali, on a par with the Mountain Green Villa or a similar hotel, with family rooms, in-house dining, and heating for the winter months. Exact hotel depends on your dates and category; we confirm the named property before you pay, and you can upgrade to a 4-star or a riverside resort on request.
